A stupid question about oil

Hi, since the target of oil is a spell up to 3rd and must target an object, can I brew(or even exist)oil of allfood? Why?

Allfood, for reference.

Excellent question. In PFS, that spell only exists on the Hunter and Ranger spell lists. Minimum caster level would actually be 4, not 3, and it would be priced at 400gp.

As an oil it would be able to transform 20 lbs of material into gooey, edible paste.

Great alternative for breaking in through a window ^_^.

Your PC can't brew it, because no PFS PC can have crafting feats, but it seems to be a valid magic oil that you could buy if you have at least 5 Fame.

as for the usefulness of the spell, think it would work on a lock? I'd love to replace the rogue with a spoon and dressing.

That... is too good an idea to pass up. Locked door? Eat your way through. Locked chest? Eat the chest, get the goods. Need to get a character free of shackles? Eat your way to freedom, my friend!

Mix in some prestidigitation for flavoring, and you can have larceny through fine dining.

I cannot favorite these posts enough. I have a new purchase to make.

Hmm

Can you toss it at someone's shield or armor? Lots of new possibilities.

Dark Archive

Seems like a costly solution to a variety of problems (but an oh-so-tasty one... with the judicious use of a Prestidigitation spell).

Side note - a wand is another way to go - cheaper on a per charge basic (120gp vs 400), but you may never use 50 charges - so that 6000gp might end up being a waste.

Oils need to be rubbed in.

Spell storing armor on the other hand...

Finally, Tabasco sauce is legal in PFS :)

Scarab Sages

I think I'm having my Hunter learn this for sure now, that's the cheapest way to do it

while amusing, the weight of a solid wood door (which a built in lock is part of) will probably exceed the weight limit for a target single object. 1" thick white pine door 30"*80" 34lbs, 36"*80" 42lbs; 1" thick oak door 30"*80" 65lbs, 36"*80" 78lbs. Any iron hardware (iron bound door) will simply add to that weight.

Hinges on a door firmly connect the door to the door frame and wall. That makes them connected and not separate objects.

A padlock on a hasp *might* qualify. Separating it from the hasp would be the key to claiming it is a separate object and a valid target for the spell. As it can't be easily separated (like a pile of rocks) the GM is likely to say no. You could separate it after a successful pick lock /open lock attempt.

old school thought on targeting many objects is to enclose the the objects in a bag or container and then magic the bag (and enclosed items){Shrink Item on bag full of loot, Mage Hand magic items using mundane bag, not touching cursed items}. So the 'pile of rocks' counting as a single object is a specific waiver for this spell. Given the nature of the spell it seems practical.

an easy in game test for having an object (and being subject to ongoing spells such as invisibility) is to pick it up and put it under your cloak or in your pocket. Unattended object vs attended object (which in game terms means it is being touched or held by a creature). That also implies that it is separate and can change ownership.
Just drawing intellectual lines about something or giving it a name doesn't make it separate. Take the word hand. People can hold hands but that doesn't separate the hands.

Oils need to be rubbed in.

This is actually very important to the continued existence of oils of allfood, since otherwise it would waste its effects on its container.

That's the rub of using oils...
