Not sure if it's too early to ask this yet, but with badge registration open and housing registration swiftly approaching I was wondering if there's going to be PFS Academy at Gencon this year?
My daughter's going to be turning 10 right around then, and I'm thinking it might be time for her first Gencon experience. I'd love to get her started in PFS (and really, RPGs in general... she's a halfway decent Magic player and plays a mean game of Pandemic, but has yet to dig into the RPG space) and PFS Academy seems like a great way to do it.
Any advice or info would be much appreciated!

To Echo what Hilary said PSA will be at GenCon we will be offering at least the Beginner, Advanced and Transitions but we should be offering Scenarios as well. The schedule is not final yet, I will try to update with a link of the PSA offerings at GenCon 2018 here in this Thread.
It is a great opportunity to have your daughter learn the game as well as play with peers.

Given the new info about the release of the Playtest rules, any idea if PSA will still be using First Edition, or if it will transition to the Playtest rules as well?
I'd love to try out the new ruleset, and it seems sub-optimal to train kids completely new to the genre on a system that's in the process of being phased out, but at the same time I imagine it's a fair amount of work to completely re-design the content, so I can see the advantage of waiting another year and converting directly to the final Second Edition rules...
We'll likely be playing PSA either way, just curious what we can look forward to as we close in on Event Registration. :)

Isn't a requirement that parent(s) have to be at the table if the player is really young (like 10 years old)?

There will be PSA! I was a PSA GM last year. Pathfinder Society Academy is a great program to share with your kids and has many awesome GMs. I think that you and your daughter will have a great time.
Hmm
I really liked your story how you took your table on a trip to boon table half way through the adventure. Very creative!

IIRC the age break is 13. Less than that the player needs a parent (or legal guardian) in the immediate area (essentially at the table). 13+ just need their parent to be onsite and reachable. Parents are not required to actually play with their child, only be available. If they would like to play, they certainly may.
Adults without children are not permitted to play at the PSA tables.

At this time, PSA is only offering Pathfinder 1E. We do not have plans to offer Starfinder or 2E Playtest material in PSA this year.

How is the wording coming on that for the event tickets/descriptions this year?
I know it was raised as a concern last year in the after-action discussion, along with the very valid concern about 'lack of space to be specific' given the draconian limits of event descriptions.

I'm sure John/Tonya will submit whatever description is best for the events. Yes, there is a limited character space so we cannot say everything we want/need to say. We list the tickets for youth players but there is no mechanism within the system to stop adults from buying those tickets. In that case, we simply tell them, no, and send 'em back to registration.

So I see that at least some of the Pathfinder events, but there are only two slots of PFS Academy and they're both Thursday morning. Anybody know if there are going to be more slots released or if this is it? Last year there were games running throughout the weekend, but perhaps most people want to GM the Playtest instead?
My daughter and I aren't getting to Gencon until Friday night this year, so if those are the only openings then we're out of luck...

It’s too early to panic. We know a GenCon is still approving events, so I’m sure the only ones will appear soon. They are well aware that not having events in the catalog on Sunday when registration opens significantly increases the chances an event will not sell which is bad for everyone involved. Just keep an eye on it.

Academy is for youth players under 18. Children under 13 must have a parent or guardian at the table with them. The adult does not have to actually play, but certainly can if they wish. Also, the requirement is not one-for-one. One parent can be the adult for multiple children as long as they qualify as the parent or guardian.
For children 13-17 the parent/guardian does not need to be at the table, but must be onsite and reachable (by cell phone, etc).
Lone adults/adults without children are not permitted to play in the Academy area.

It should be someone responsible and capable of making necessary decisions for the child. Generally, we are not checking IDs. You are the parent, so make appropriate decisions for your children. We just don't want to see a 16 year-old, older sibling being the "supervision" for an under 13 player. If you report to our Academy HQ and notify us you are leaving your child under the care of their uncle/aunt, grandparent, adult sibling, etc it should be fine. Remember, the point of this requirement is to ensure the safety of your children in case of an emergency, not to create an unreasonable burden on family gaming.
