Mounted character in Giantslayer

Advice

Just wondering if its viable to use a mounted character in Giantslayer? Does anyone have experience playing one? Or is the campaign full of tight dungeons and adventuring on the high seas? Thanks for the advice.

I've played it but not with a mounted character. From what I recall you should be fine with a mounted build. Levels 1-3 mount might only be useful 50% of the time after that it should only be okay.

My favorites are ghost rider cavalier and i inquisitor with a familiar.
Cavalier - to get your mount when needed, hawk mauler familiar for halfling for a compact rider.

Nature fang druid or hunter are also great.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm GMing Giantslayer currently (in book 4). Our party has a ranger who took at mount at 5 (had a one level dip) and grabbed boon companion to do mounted archery. We also had a player death at level 4 where the player created a Beast Rider Cavalier in book 2 as well.

Basically, don't plan to use your mount much during book 1-2 if it's bigger than medium. It'll come up, but generally design is such that you won't always be able to take it where you're going - though there are opportunities. After that, however, it really comes into play because you'll be fighting in giant sized areas with lots of areas to maneuver.

So, generally, this might be a great AP for it if you want to do it, but be prepared to wait until about level 7-8 before you can really do it reliably. Also spend some time working with your GM on what you want to do mounted. There's a lot of weirdness / ambiguity in the mounted rules and you'll do your GM a favor asking in advance since it will come up.

Thanks to everyone for your replies! Very helpful.

Every mounted character should build a plan b.
Aid another or tanking for example.

Hosteling armor , carry companion, reduce animal and ghost rider have a build in pocket for companiona
