Max skill ranks = character lvl!?

General Discussion

Okay so don't laugh but all my friends missed this. We have played table top games since high school and we were all confident when we skimmed the book. I have been seeing discussions about OP Operative and what not. I can't hold it against people since I DID THE EXACT SAME THING. But check this out.

Operative gets access to 16 skills.
They get 8 + Int in skill points.
Operative edge gives a +1 to skill points.

compared to:
Envoy gets access to 16 skills.
They get 8 + Int in skill points.
Envoy Expertise gives a +1d6 to 2 skills and every 4 lvls gets to use it with another skill.

Now it is just a quick example but damn.. After flipping through the book I found this and it blew my mind. I text all my friends and they missed it too.

After seeing this the Operative is pretty balanced. Most might already know this and if you do, cool. But I have a gut feeling someone might benefit from reading the book fully.

You read it right. Honestly to me it's like the skill rank cap in Iron Kingdoms. Their's is more crap because it's capped by hero rank (Hero 2 rank cap, Expericenced 3 rank cap, Veteran 4 rank cap) and you get so many skill points that it's either wasted or invested in skills that you don't normally use for your classes (you multiclass right off the bat don't worry about it.)

I would do either double or lvl 1/2 if there's any problems. Or look at the level up chart in pathfinder.

Well in D&D they had max skill ranks. It's nothing new but for some reason we never put it together.

Operator edge does not increase your number of skill points. It is an insight bonus to all skills.

I have read this post three times and I still don't understand the point you are trying to make Farlanghn.

I think he is saying that you get the bonus to the skill count towards the max skill rank which is not correct.

I'm not entirely sure what point you're making, but max skill ranks being equal to character level is a Pathfinder rule that has survived into Starfinder. In D&D 3.5 it's character level + 3. I would be careful with modifying the rule since a few feats have minimum ranks in a particular skill (and therefore also minimum character level) as prerequisites.

Okay everyone chill. Maybe instead of everyone trying to guest what I meant you just let me respond. It's mid-day and I'm at work so I can't stalk the boards.

I was merely stating that comparing the envoy and operative, the operative isn't that much better at skills. Which a lot of people stated. I figured instead of piggy backing off other threads pointing out the skill rank max was a good topic. If my friends and I were the only ones who missed this then let this post die. Obviously multiple people have gotten out the pitchforks so this post is not helping like I thought it would.

I know this. But when comparing an operative/envoy skill check I wanted to add in their class features. It's better to have a +1d6 to computers than a +1. Only reason why I added the math part.

No. I was just adding it out for the people who might have made the same mistake as my friends and I. If you didn't make this mistake **slow clap**. That's why I pointed out my skimming of the book and how skimming the book and assuming you know things from previous games is a bad idea.

Just because skill rank is character level, doesn't mean anything with the additional bonuses.

I think that was his point. If you didn't understand the rules completely you can think something is broken when it's not. I'm sure this is something we have all done.

I'm multitasking so may have missed that part.
