fey wizard build help

Advice

I was trying to make a player character for king maker that would adventure well but form a faerie court between adventures. I went back and forth between wizard and druid a few times, but ultimately found neither to be very satisfying.

Just to fill everyone in as to where I am coming from, I have played D&D/Pathfinder for DECADES and have never once cast a 9th level spell as a player. I understand that King Maker will tap out at a max of 17th level, so that means witch, cleric, druid, or wizard if I want to finally hit that milestone (wands and scrolls don't count.)

I see the fey queen as having power of plants, animals, and magic beasts (like a druid) but with a strong strain of trickery magic built in via charms and illusions. I looked at the wood school for wizard, and it was not bad, but not as druidic as I would like. I also saw the alternate wizard class spell sage and it looks very interesting, but I am afraid my character will be to weak to survive the first few levels.

race: Gathlain
alt race traits: bower born and symbiotic imbalance
this gives me a fey character with entangle and bonuses to diplomacy and handle animal, a little faerie feel right from the start (but no int bonus)

class: wizard / spell sage
focused spells - less spells will hurt but having one damage spell upped by 4 levels will give me a once a day bang that will make me not be worthless
spell study: This is the appeal of the class. All bard and druid spells, though not often and really only out of combat. This is the real fey queen feel to the build.

skills:
knowledge, arcane
knowledge, nature
spellcaraft
diplomacy (not a class skill, but with bower born and student of philosophy trait I should be pretty good.)
perception
handle animal/use magic device
(eventually)
engineering
bluff

Feats:
1 wasp familiar
1 scribe scroll
3 spell focus, enchant
5 craft wondrous item
5 spell pen
7 improved familiar
9 greater spell focus, ench (or craft rods)
10 time stutter
11 infectious charms
13 greater spell pen
15 forests blessing
15 resilient illusions

What I don't like about it is that not having a school robs me of my use 3+int abilities plus my bonus spell. Adding that starting with an 18 int instead of 20 due to race means I will only have 2 1st level spells to start with as opposed to 4 + my school powers if I don't go spell sage.

I've looked at all sorts of alternate wizard classes that use shaman / adept / sorcerer traits thinking something would give me a good druid or nature based spell cross over, but I can't find anything. Anyone have better ideas?

I really wouldn't rule out sorcerer if I were you. Yes, it gets 9th-level spells at 18th level instead of 17th, but (1) you will literally be playing for years before you get to that level, (2) you will only be at that level for a brief time, and (3) if you are that motivated, I'm sure you can convince your GM to bring the game up to 18th level to give you your "capstone".

If you come to your senses and consider sorcerer, the Verdant bloodline has a very nice 1st-level ability that will help you out greatly in the early levels, and (unlike most 1st-level sorcerer powers) remain relevant through mid levels. Sorcerer also takes advantage of your racial Cha bonus, unlike the other classes you've highlighted. Plus, I feel like high Cha helps you better achieve the "fey queen" idea.

Dot.

I'd recommend taking a look at the Witch class, if you want a more nature-based arcane caster. Your witch patron could be the powerful fey being who taught you magic in the first place.

If you have access to the Blood of the Coven supplement, then the Fey Gifts or Green Whispers specialized patron might work well with your character.

Druid with fey spell lore, maybe? I mean, this is basically what that feat is for.

You can take a look at the Feyspeaker Druid. You lose a lot of martial effectuiveness, but if you're just looking to be a fey-based full caster, it's pretty to-the-point. Taking the Fey Spell Lore feat as Lucy_Valentine suggested would also be very helpful.

If you don't mind going more ranger than druid you could look at taking the "Hinterlander" prestige class. It basically turns you into a ranger while mostly maintaining your spell progression.

Alternatively, you could make an Druid with the Urban Druid Archetype plus knowledge domain.

From a role-playing perspective your character could be "wizard" who simply delved deep into nature magic. You could even take levels in pathfinder savant to pick up some of the wizard spells you would otherwise miss out on.

Fey speaker and fey spell lore are beautiful flavor wise. Is there anything similar to add druid spells to a wizard?

I looked at the pact wizard, but will look again to see if the Fey Gifts or Green Whispers patron would help that build. (PS - am I missing something on the pact wizard class? If you half your wizard level for the oracle curse benefits you only get the 2nd effect at level 20?)

You can take the Magaambyan Arcanist prestige class to add druid spells to your wizard spell list, but they have to be 2 spell levels below your highest level spell.

I'm not aware of any way to get a list of Druid spells put onto your spell list in a way similar to Fey Spell Lore, but there are a couple Arcane Discoveries that can help you a little bit.

There's an Arcane Discovery called Yuelral's Blessing you can take at 5th level that gives you a +1 bonus to CL and spell DC on any Wizard spell you cast that also appears on the Druid spell list. There's another Arcane Discovery called Faith Magic (also eligible at 5th level) that lets you pick a domain offered by the deity you worship, and pick a spell from that domain 2 levels lower than the highest level spell you can cast, and add it to your spell book, though it must be cast as a spell 1 level higher (so you can take it at 5th level to grab a 1st-level spell and cast it as a 2nd level spell, or you can wait until 10th level and grab a 3rd-level spell and cast it as a 4th-level spell. Obviously, you'd want to grab a spell from a nature-themed domain to get a Druid spell. Also, this spell is always cast as a Divine spell (meaning Arcane Spell Failure isn't a thing, but you need a holy symbol to cast it if a Divine Focus is one of the components).

Thanks for bringing that up. I had initially ruled it out as I didn't like the two feats it required, but looking again, I like it better than the build I posted above. Since I won't have to burn a feat to get a familiar, I'm not giving that much up. Plus it makes diplomacy a class skill for a nice little bump.
