looking thru what they put out so far I've noticed no GM's guide like D&D's dungeon masters guide is this because the cover what you need to know to run a game in the material they have put out or is it a book coming down the pipeline?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Paizo has always put the relevant GM material right into the Core Rule Book. So unlike the separation of the PHB and DMG, Paizo offers a single CRB which covers both.

In the past, Paizo's DMG has been about how to be a better GM and how to handle player personalities, rather than relevant rules materials needed for a GM.

The single Starfinder corebook contains all the rules for the GM to run the game and the players to play it. Outside of that, a GM will probably want the Alien Archive (the setting bestiary).

I'd make that "definitely want the Alien Archive". It contains the rules to create NPCs, and without that, you will be radically limited in ability to do anything outside prepackaged adventures.

As others have said, the Core Rulebook includes the GameMastering section rather than include it separately! The CRB for pathfinder also includes information about the setting itself, as well as the logistics needed for creating custom starships and running their combat.

The Alien Archive is the game's first Bestiary and also includes rules for creating your own enemies, and the method for doing so is a LOT easier than trying to create stats from scratch like I used to do for pathfinder. Very good to have!

I think that's all you'd absolutely need to get rolling, but Starfinder Pact Worlds is coming in March and it'll apparently have new info about the setting as well as some more items and races, so might be worth grabbing later down the line if you aren't doing an entire homebrew universe.

...and speaking of other things that might interest you in the future, the CRB is a bit sparse on setting - though it certainly covers the basics.

The Pact Worlds should correct that in the spring.
