Toad familiar HP bonus temp or perm?

I understand it gives the master +3 hp....if the toad dies, are the HP received retracted?
Also, if they do not retract, after my week and ritual to receive another familiar, if I choose toad, do I get an additional 3 HP?
I must ask then if the master receives the additional HP with the second toad at this point totaling two toad familiars 6 bus HP, what is to stop me from murdering my toad on sight, waiting her week, and rinse repeat...

A familiar grants special abilities to its master, as given on the table below. These special abilities apply only when the master and familiar are within 1 mile of each other.


They are probably most similar to the barbarian's rage: they gain an increase to Constitution while raging, which temporarily increases their HP. These are not "temporary HP," however.

Similarly, your wizard or whatever gains 3 bonus HP, "permanently," but really only as long as you have the toad. Killing it and repeatedly getting new toads would definitely not stack; you would be regaining the same 3 HP over and over again.

Yep. They're both temporary and permanent.

They are permanent until the conditions are no longer met, then they are lost.


“Temporary” is a tricky word to use, because of temporary hit points.

Yes. Toad dies, you remove those 3 hp. Get another toad, you add 3 hp to your normal total


Yeah, they are not 'temporary hit points' as that term comes with it's own rules, but they only exist as long as your Toad is alive and within 1 mile.
