I find them very powerfull for battle and infiltration. Also their passive getting better at high level.
Familiar just have many requirment to be usefull. And they need to be replaced with 200 gold per level and week worth ritual. Of course wizard can help to power familiar.
But i think eidolon far more worth.
Eidolon can spellcast too.

In terms of power, Eidolon is the best sidekick, familiar is the worst.
In general yes, though an eldritch guardian's familiar can eventually rival it. The weird thing about the familiar is that it has almost nothing on its own. It basically doesn't have its own BAB, HitPoints, skills or feats. But you can make all of those things fairly good on a few builds. The improved familiar with exotic weapon proficiency can be very interesting and powerful. Whip builds or archery builds can do a lot from relative safety.

The difference is in class design. Traditionally, Summoners are built to summon an Eidolon and cast buffs on it, using the inter-dimensional buddy as a primary means of getting the job done in combat. Anything else is often seen as a backup (Summon Monster spell-like abilities) or are very niche (Summoner/Eidolon teamwork feat combos.)
Familiars, on the other hand, are a feature for high level casters. They're often taken for flavor as much as they are for mechanics, and without Improved Familiar, most people prioritize their choices on what directly benefits the master. This is why you see so many people recommend familiars that give an Initiative bonus to the master.
You -can- make a build that involves the familiar throwing its weight around, but you tend to require out-of-the-way abilities or archetypes that specifically change the feature to do so.
