The group will be able to use skills during a rage, which means skills like perception, knowledge and healing can be used.
More importantly you can actually tailor make the rage to the situation. Need reflex saves and higher a.c.? Or HP and fort? Or straight damage?
Also because you don't lose casting in medium, just the ability to wear it, a feat gets you back up on a.c..
With a couple levels you could jump your dex up, your a.c. into medium and then finally stand with a couple team mates to gain a further boost.
You could tank with that.
It's really decent for tailoring to a group. Not everyone is STR based but everyone loves a good dex boost

It is group dependent. If you have many Gish types caster urban is better but giving up spell kenning, hp, boosts to two saves is a lot to give up. In my experience if you have three pcs or animal companions that can accept the standard song you will do very well with the standard skald. As you give out so many bonuses simultaneously.
If the casting classes want they can just not take the song for a round and do what they need to. This replicated moment of clarity rage power. If you have community minded they even keep the bonuses just not the rage powers.

Ah. Well. I'm going to be honest I don't think there is a single more "what's the group made of" class than the Skald.
You need to have a clue because you could go the route of
A) standard skald -boost the hell out of strength based characters
B) urban skald - boost a more flexible option, good for those that are more Dex based and still want skill use
C) court skald - boost casters like a standard boosts martials
D) spell warrior skald - focus on handing out enchantments over base stat boosts. Great for weapon boosts but..no spell kenning.
Without knowing what is going where? This is actually a hard thing for a skald. You could end up making a really useless character.
Damn.
