Versatile weapon feat question.

Rules Questions

So, does the effect of versatile weapon feat apply to projectile range weapons, specifically bows and crossbows? Via feat fluff, this doesn't make logical sense, because how does changing your grip change a bows damage type? Thanks

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It doesn't limit the weapon to any particular categories so it does work with bows, crossbows, etc. And no, it doesn't make "real world" sense, but neither does dealing piercing damage with a whip or slashing damage with a mace.

except that you are not using the bow to deal damage... you are using arrows. and arrows already come in piercing and bludgeoning so that you can easily pull the arrow type you need if DR comes up... also, archers have access to cluster shot - and all the melee builds with they had a feat as awesome as that.

Oddman80 hits the issue exactly on the head. You are not using the bow or xbow by itself to deal damage. They are just launch the part that deals the damage. And yes, I understand it via transferred force, but your grip on those weapons can't change how an arrow or bolt works.

You can add restrictions if you want, but the feat says you can deal different damage types if you have Weapon Focus and BAB +1. There is no restriction on the type of weapon.

Yep. it requires "wielding a weapon with which you have Weapon Focus".

It makes as much sense that a bolt deals B damage as it does that a staff deals S or P damage. Or a shuriken doing B damage. Or a P with brass knuckles. Or S with a sap. Or...

You are going to have a BAD time with pathfinder if you're expecting things correct rules to make logical sense in the mundane real world.

sorry... this was a rules thread. my bad. my point was more along the lines of "oh god, why on earth would you take versatile weapon when you are an archer. Without having tho invest any feats, the assortment of mundane arrows that are available to you, already make a bow a far more versatile a weapon than any other in the game."

No worries. It happens to all of us.

I don't think an archer would/should take it. I just think they can. ;)

It's much better for melee or switch hitters. And while slings and bows are good, crossbows and more exotic weapons like the Kestros would see more use out of it, though as feat starved as ranged builds are, I don't know if they could squeeze it in. And once you get cluster shot, it's usefulness drops though I could see retraining versatility into cluster.
