I do agree that I like the fact the daughter of Dick is now Batwoman. It adds a level of symmetry to the Beyond Mythos. Which is always cool.

Last God for me might drag in parts, but I do love the exposition (especially the creation myth that Gods made.) Also the action is quite good as well as the characters.

Ghost Rider has lots of moving parts, but to me, the most moving of the parts is how Mephisto is like being SUPER manipulative in like THREE different titles (Serpent Crown, Avengers and this) while still seeming like he's not TOTALLY in control. But yeah the Spirit of Corruption has some interesting tidbits I can't wait to see more of.

The entire X line has felt leveled up even though I do question some of the ideology behind it. (Mostly the fact Kurt already KNOWS there's an afterlife. I mean there was a storyline and everything!) But I do think Crucible (as presented) gives mutancy more...emphasis in terms of fighting for it and giving that emphasis to Apocalypse makes sense.

Regarding the techo-virus, it's not Orchis but those weird Children of the Vault who did that. What I liked about it was the visuals which you don't often see in SOME comic stories, especially involving psychics.

Also I'm pretty sure that wasn't Meggan. Mostly because it doesn't seem in character for her to kill her own kind.

Armor has been cool for a while but I'm glad to see her grow even more in these stories.

Damnit! I hate getting my mutant-hating techno-human organizations mixed up.

A-zombie,

I know I quibble, but it's a kind of important distinction because one organization has SOME of HYDRA in it, while the other is just REALLY advanced humans. Like 10,000 years of evolution...

Scarab Sages

Quibble away, dude. I'm mostly lamenting my middle-age, sleep-deprivation induced momentary lapse of reason when I made that error.

Sokay I'm pretty sleep deprived too. My good grace is the fact that I retain able comic book knowledge from around...2003 to the present. Plus updates thanks to reboots.

Scarab Sages

Haven't been to collect books in over two weeks. Firstly because I was preparing for a Disney trip, then because I was on said trip. Luckily, my store is operating under norml conditions, so I can theoretically go whenever I want.

Scarab Sages

Since my last post, Harris County has issued a Stay Home Stay Safe order, so my comic book store has closed for normal business. Luckily, they are offering to ship books to homes, with any order over $50 getting 15% off shipping.

So I'll (hopefully) soon have my books from last week and this week.

That's likely to be it for awhile though. Diamond and a lot of the printers have shut down.

Yeah I don't think we'll be seeing much comics after April probably...

But we'll see.

Oh btw A-zombie, if you do read Immortal Hulk #33, be sure to not eat anything while you're reading...

Scarab Sages

The only thing I didn't like about the Robin 80th Anniversary one shot was the inclusion of that little s%**-stain Damien Wayne. As always, I consider him unworthy of the identity, or of even being included in the Bat Family.

That being said, the stories that I did read were all good ones, some of which I recall from the actual issues they first appeared in. Of all of them, however, I think my favorite one was the Jason Todd story. Which is odd, of course, since (other than the s@!$ stain) he's my least favorite Robin. That story was good, though. It showed a less douchey side to both Jason and Bruce.

I was a little disappointed they didn't put in a story with the original female Robin, Carrie Kelly. They could have done something new with her, cutting out one of the s+~! stain stories.

The resurrection / revamp of the character has really done wonders for him. Much like the Bucky -> Winter Soldier development over at the other company (although perhaps to a lesser extent?).

And yeah, Damien, ugh.

Dick, Tim, Jason, etc. will always be 'Bruce's sons,' as far as I'm concerned, regardless of Damien's genetics.

Punisher: Soviet - good end to a good series.

Immortal Hulk - fun times. I just wish the fist-to-fist battle between Xemnu and Hulk would have lasted a bit longer.

Fantastic Four - The new "soul mate" for Johnny, though kind of a forced issue, is growing on me. I liked the whole, I can talk to birds so now I can communicate with dinosaurs thing.

Last God - it's turning out to be "every one of the original heroes is a complete a$#&%#@", except maybe for the dude they all framed as being a traitor. We'll see. I'm still liking it.

Valkyrie and Thor seem to be indulging in the same problem. How many uber threats to the universe can we throw at heroes?

I occasionally indulge in Judge Dredd. Picked up the 100 page Giant a few weeks back, and this week's books had the first issue of a new (mini?) series, Judge Dredd: False Witness. It was enjoyable, despite the writer's petty insertion of his own childish political insults.

Scarab Sages

I'm loving the new Brood story in X-Men. The idea of the Kree having a millenia-long plan to use the Brood as a weapon via some genetic tinkering fits perfectly with their past actions. I was surprised to see that Gladiator had a kid, though.

I hate to say it, but the Wolverine storyline is kind of annoying. After all this time, you'd think the X-folk could have found a way to protect Wolverine (or any other mutant) from control by such a powerful psionic talent as this Pale Girl. And, speaking of whom, how the hell has she flown under the radar until now?

The Xemnu fight going longer would have meant that Xemnu could hang with Worldbreaker Hulk. Which we all know, that ain't happening.

I'm still just feeling like FF is in a holding pattern until they figure out what to do with them and finish out Empyre.

I'm pretty sure the traitor is the actual good guy, given all the other things that have happened.

I dunno about 'indugling" but they are certainly are bringing on major hitters.

I was a little less enamored by that, but at the same time, it does bode well for the other races mentioned in this book.

As for the Pale Girl, I have no idea but I'm pretty sure once Hellions are done with Maddie, they might want to swing by...

Thank you Sam.

Also while I, too am dissappointed by no comics this week, I still remain hopeful we'll have them in the near future.

Scarab Sages

Crap! Now I can't remember what else I was complaining about when I commited my unforgivable sin of mentioning The Disease Which Shall Not Be Named by name.

Scarab Sages

In other news, it turns out the thing I'll miss most about my comic book shop being closed down is not being able to easily get more boards and bags.

I could order them off Amazon, but the shipment would take weeks to arrive since they're prioritizing certain items. Might be worth it in the long run.

Scarab Sages

Dude from the comic book store (not the store I go to, but the lead in the chain) emailed me the other day about offering mail order subscriptions. I had thought no books were coming out, but may have to at least call them and get some more details about what this means.

At the very least, maybe I can get them to ship me some bags and boards.

What ever works, A-zombie. Whatever works.

Scarab Sages

I keep seeing this fundraiser about creators auctioning off original stuff (mostly art, I think) to help support local comic stores. Even if I had the money to buy something, I doubt I would. The chances of any of that money getting to the store I frequent would most likely be "slim to none". I see no sense in wasting money to support some creator's favorite store.

Scarab Sages

I keep thinking about the idea of the comic book industry being unable to recover from the current "crisis". Personally, if the entire industry folded tomorrow, I'd probably only feel a little sad.

No more comics means I'd stand a better chance of not running out of storage space (or not as quickly running out). And if my collection weren't growing, it'd limit the number of bags and boards I still have to buy. Not to mention, I've got like 30+ years worth of comics to re-read, so I'd have plenty to occupy my time.

Silver linings.

Scarab Sages

Hopefully, I'll get a few more books in the mail today. Some last of the stuff that got distributed.

Scarab Sages

And, that reminds me, I've got to email the store about getting more bags and boards. Or maybe re-check Amazon.

Scarab Sages

Finally got what could very well be the last of my comic collection (for awhile anyway).

From Beyond the Unknown 100-Page Giant - some decent stuff. The first story, with Hal Jordan, kind of sucked balls. Some tech-enhanced revengers who manhandle GL on the first go around, then he miraculously is able to overcome them and kick ass. Crap! The Kamandi story was cool. The Legion story was decent. The Superman (with Adam Strange) and Batman (with the Metal Men) stories were definitely products of their time - fun, but a little hokey. The final story, with Katma Tui, was....really creative. How do you get someone to understand the concept of a Green Lantern when sight (and all that's associated with it) is an alien concept (pun intended.)

The X-Men Giant starring Nightcrawler was cool. It was nice to see the X-mansion again. And the Sidri. And we finally have confirmation that Warlock is alive (and living as the shell over Cypher's right arm). That dude with the eyes was kind of creepy looking, but I like the way they framed his power. Should have given him a better name, though, like Argos.

X-Men + Fantastic Four. I love the way Doom can be completely courteous and seemingly helpful, while also being a total d~!+%ead and contemptuous of everyone around him. Doom Particles - f*$@ing classic. Although this whole theme of "godpower" going through all superheroes sounds too much like that crap they pulled with the Speed Force over in Flash (where they added two other forces as well). Loved the Doom Sentinels. It was also nice to see Rogue again. She's been kind of sidelined a bit in all this reboot.

Scarab Sages

And that, as they say, is that. Now it's just a wait and see if the comic book industry will recover. And, even if they do, will the books be worth collecting anymore?

Well I'm still holding out hope for Immortal Hulk... if nothing else.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! Our governor is allowing many businesses to reopen starting this Friday. With luck, that will include my comic book store. I don't think there's any new books, but at least I can go buy a few packs of bags and boards, maybe.

Scarab Sages

Last night, whilst performing my usual perusal of movies recommended by my Amazon viewing habits, I finally watched a short-ish documentary on Chris Claremont's time with X-Men. Very interesting. They even had some cool archival footage of Len Wein.

Scarab Sages

The documentary also had a lot of Louise Simonson, of course. At one point they talked about how she had been the model for the woman on the cover of House of Secrets #92, which introduced Swamp Thing. I had already been made aware of this, during a discussion in my local comic book shop. They have a copy of that issue hanging on the wall.

Louise is awesome. :)

Scarab Sages

Woot! My comcic book store did open yesterday! So not only was I able to go buy some more bags and boards, but I did actually have one book in my folder - Batamn 100-Page Giant #4.

Scarab Sages

I don't know why I'm a sucker for these 100-page Giants. It started out with the Swamp Thing one. Since there's no regular Swamp Thing series going on, it was a way for me to get my fix.

I've gotten several of them since then.

Scarab Sages

So now I have 300 more each of bags and boards. I probably still need about 10 times that many, or maybe more.

Right now I'm waiting for later in May when Marvel starts give me more stuff to read...

Scarab Sages

Martin Pasko, 'Superman,' 'Batman: The Animated Series' Writer, Dies at 65

Sad to hear. He was a gifted writer. I first heard this news from Walt Simonson's Facebook page.

At least The Rona didn't get him.

Very sad to hear. He brought a lot of fun and joy to the world that goes on even now.

Well I have to say this, other than few spotty releases, it's been a very DULL day in comics for little ole me.

Scarab Sages

I needed some more bags and boards, so the other day I went to my comic book store. Bought 400 each of bags and boards.

The only new comic book they had for me was Hawkman. I decided I wanted more new reading material than that, so I perused the store shelves until I found something worthy of being owned by me - Neil Gaiman's Midnight Days. It's a collection of some Vetigo stuff he did.

I'm always up for stuff by Gaiman. I wish he'd do some more comic writing.

Scarab Sages

They also had more of the fancy short boxes. I picked up two of those - one had Ghost Rider art, the other was Joker/Batman themed.

I prefer the short boxes these days. They don't hold as much, but are easier to move around.

Scarab Sages

Huh! DC put out a source book for their Black Label title The Last God. It's 5E compatible. Very....interesting.

A-zombie,

Not that surprising. I'm pretty sure Jim Zub is doing some of the writing. But I am glad to see more detail about this world.

Scarab Sages

Finally read through the newest issue of Hawkman. Thank the gods they finally are done with that Sky Tyrant crap (for now at least). I was getting tired of the constant Bad Hawkman talking about how many people he'll kill so he can live for ever, while Good Hawkman whines like an ethereal b#$!&.

I loved the plague doctor flashback. That was cool.

Well don't get TOO comfortable. Now they're going back to well on that whole "Past lives" thing with the one beyond the void thingie.

Though I am glad to see a resolution to Godspeed, Paradox and now Thawne back in the mix.

Thoughts on the most recent new comics I’ve read....

Detective Comics ended that lame Church of Two story in a very lame fashion. And now it looks like yet another madcap scheme by Joker. At least it’s the real Joker, however, and not that s~+% Batman Who Laughs.

I picked up the most recent issue of Avengers. Couldn’t resist when I saw Moon Knight on the cover, and The Age of Khonshu story title. It didn’t disappoint. Although I truly hope they aren’t taking a page from that a@&!*%! Bendis and turning another favorite hero into a villain (or back into a villain, as that douchebag did with Mark Shaw). Either way, though, I loved the story, and I’m looking forward to its continuation.

Looks like they’re setting up the next big arc in Batman Beyond. I only hope they truly did kill off Damian Beyond. That would be awesome.

Marauders was kick ass. I loved how they handled the directive to “leave none to tell the tale”. I also find myself sincerely looking forward to the day they find out Shaw killed Kitty. I really want to see what gets done to him.

Detective, much like some of the other Batman books, are all in preparation for the next Joker War.

The Batman who laughs will be a major thing in Dark Knights Death Metal.

I was a little annoyed at how powerful Moon Knight became...but then being empowered by Khonshu because Khonshu wants to stop (or possible kill) Mephisto/the Devil is better than some other ideas. I will say seeing him fight Iron Fist and his only moves were "Fist of Khonshu" and "Foot of Khonshu" were pretty sweet. Also Black Panther proves he's a great leader.

I doubt Batman Beyond will kill of Damien. If only because it makes for a decent rivalry.

What happens to Shaw probably won't be pretty...but I am a little surprised by the whole Spaceship/flying saucer thing.

Scarab Sages

Hawkman - Well, Hawkman and Hawkgirl are reunited, and it looks like just in time to confront this Lord Beyond the Void. He looks sufficiently villainous enough. Hopefully, they won't drag this on too long.

Daredevil was cool. I actually liked it when Fisk clocked Crossbones. Looking forward to seeing where this goes, but I at least hope those a$$@~*# Stromwyn's get the s@!# kicked out of them.

Batman's Grave continues to be an excellent Batman story, probably better than most of the crap the main Bat books have been peddling for the last few years.

New Mutants was....okay. So far, this current story has been one of the disappointments of the X-titles.

And they finally put out the third book in the Question Black Label series. Of course, it was supposed to be the final book, but as we all know, there was a...CRISIS THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED...which disrupted schedules. Anyway, the story continued to be weird, yet cool. The artwork, as expected, continued to be awesome. Cowan and Sienkiewicz kick ass.

Really? No mention AT ALL about a certain Death Metal comic that turns out to be way more awesome than expected??

Also yes Daredevil was a great book. New Mutants, I think, is still trying to find its footing after disparate storylines ended.
