Scarab Sages

Look at you, Batman Beyond! Pulling an old school, rarely used Bat villain out of your ass! Very entertaining. I continue to enjoy the art as well.

Seeing a (small) Thor corp was cool. Looks like Thor might become King Thor sooner than usual. He's got the arm and (lack of) eye already.

Fantastic Four was an entertaining one-shot. Although I can see the wisdom in toning down Franklin's powers, I think it would be a dick move to take them away completely. Hopefully, they won't do that. If not, though, then I wonder what kind of power set they might settle on. Maybe go the route of his Psi-Lord persona?

This current Doctor Strange story is getting a little on the silly side. Still, it's been nice to see Clea again, and I hope they put the two of them back together.

Batman Beyond using a variant of False Face was pretty nice.

But really for me, War of the Realms was about the return of Mjolnir and being forged not just out of a star (or in this case, our Sun) but also re-using the God Storm to help. As for Thor becoming King Thor...eh. I'm more interested to see what Thor can do against Knull since it's pretty clear he and Carnage will be on a collusion course.

I think in terms of Franklin's power set...they'll tone it down...but when necessary, they might try to raise it back up.

I actually like the current story, even if it does seem silly. I mean Galactus EATS Dormammu!

Franklin's power level and abilities have varied widely for decades, essentially to serve the whims of the story. I'm sure this current approach won't last either.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming King Thor series, but that's future King Thor, not our Thor becoming him. We'll see what happens with Thor. I do wonder if this might be Aaron's wrap up? In which case, they'll probably go off in some other direction.
In general, I'm not too fond of "Thor ruling Asgard" arcs. Too constraining.

thejeff,

I'm more inclined to think Thor will try to find a way to match/gather his own kind of Thor Force because he's clearly not had much time with the Odin Force...

But with regards to Aaron's run, I'm pretty sure this is his last arc...

One way or another, the modern Thor won't have the Odinpower. At least for long.

You can do an arc with it, but not that level of power for a main character for long.

No I agree thejeff. Eventually they'll find a way to retcon some or all of this, much like Al Ewing is SORT of doing with Immortal Hulk. Kind of..

Scarab Sages

New Doom Patrol series started up. First issue was unimpressive nonsense. I may give it one or two more issues, but will most likely give it up.

And this most recent Punisher is probably my last. Seriously, thirteen issues and we're still on this "war against Zemo and Hydra" crap, with no end in sight. The writer should be ashamed of himself. As should whomever is approving what he writes.

Scarab Sages

Picked up Wolverine: Exit Wounds just for s*+@s and giggles. Pretty cool. Stories by Larry Hama, Chris Claremont and Sam Kieth. Not sure if it's going to be an ongoing thing, or if this was just a one-shot. Either way, it was a fun read.

The Claremont story was especially interesting. I don't recall if they've ever touched on the subject before, but it makes sense that someone with Logan's longevity would have descendants out their in the world.

Scarab Sages

Savage Avengers continues to be...fun. And I love the artwork. Even though it won't last, I'm glad I picked it up.

The finale to War of the Realms was really cool. Mjolnir reborn! Dardevil, Loki and Jane Foster teaming up on the take down of Laufey! Thors kicking ass and taking names. Wherever they go from here, it was an interesting ride. Might have to pick up some of the books spinning out of this, especially King Thor.

Detective Comics was really cool. Way better than the Arkham Knight crap they somehow allowed to be printed. Loved seeing Spectre again. And now it seems we have a cult dedicated to him, or something to that effect. The art was pretty neat - kind of reminded me of Shawn McManus. The cover was kick ass! I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with this.

Scarab Sages

Still loving the third Batman/TMNT crossover. None of the stories have disappointed me so far. I'd love to see more animated films based on them.

A-zombie,

With regards to the new Doom Patrol...after I stopped with the last one by Way, I wasn't ready to go back to anything else unless it had Grant Morrison's approval.

My major beef with Punisher versus Hydra is the lack of Hydra A list villains that could EASILY wipe the floor with Frank. But this Thunderbolts team? Not really. I mean sure it has Moonstone and Fixer...but how about someone else? Like maybe Daken? Or hell, anyone other than Jigsaw and Ghost. Not sure I'd want Radioactive Man that close on stage... But we'll see.

Exit Wounds didn't do much for me...but then again I'm more interested in Old Man Logan at this point.

For me, Savage Avengers should be the next title that has Blade along with Wolverine, Punisher, Venom and Elektra in it, not so much Blade, Spider Woman, Wiccan, Spectrum/Monica, Angela and Winter Soldier/Bucky. (though maybe if they used those guys here it would be alright...) Regardless, having Conan bonded with Venom is pretty neat.

War of the Realms proves to me one thing; Marvel listened when people said "Look you guys did great with the first Avengers movie and the last one(s). So why not do that?" Which I think Jason Aaron took to heart. Loki apparently not only killing his dad but also taking up the throne of Jotunheim. We'll see how that goes. I'm still miffed about losing Brunnihilde...but at the same time it's nice that Jane has joined up to help out.

I was honestly underwhelmed by this story arc in Detective Comics...but you're right, it's better than the Arkham Knight story.

Scarab Sages

There was a new Wolverine vs Blade one shot. It was fun, if a little on the goofy side. I hadn't seen Blade in a good while. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed the Wesley Snipes cinematic version. I'd love to see them do a new Blade series, ongoing or mini would be fine with me.

Also picked up the first issue of two other Marvel miniseries.

The Invisible Woman one looks like it could be fun. I enjoy a good spy caper, and like it when they showcase her solo stuff as an agent type. There were brief appearances by both versions of Nick Fury: original recipe, and Samuel L. Jackson flavor. I like the way they worked the second version into mainstream by making him the original's son. Wish they'd do another series with him. Issue two has Madripoor and Black Widow.

The other is the Weapon Plus series with Wolverine and Captain America. Looks like it's going to delve deeper into the whole Weapon Plus program, and how it's secretly been churning out super soldiers over the years. Artwork is pretty decent. I'm only vaguely familiar with the deceased-but-appearing-as-a-digital-recording Phantomex character. I think I read up on him once, but he comes from an era where I didn't want anything to do with the X-titles.

Scarab Sages

I've been seeing this Year of the Villain thing pop up for DC titles. Haven't they done something like this before? Several times? between that and this Leviathan thing going on, DC just seems to be throwing s&$$ against the wall to see what sticks.

Still, the Hawkman issue was cool. Some hints at future story paths, and a newly empowered Shadow Thief. I liked the art. The only problem I had was this continuing Hawkman agonizing over his past lives and what he may or may not have done in all of them is getting a bit old. It'd be nice if they could go at least one issue without mentioning that.

The second part of the Spectre story in Detective was fun. The cover had me laughing a bit, showing Batman and Spectre, with Spectre shouting "I am vengeance!" and Bats shouting "I am the night!" Nice easter egg. And it was nice to see a two part story.

Scarab Sages

War of the Realms Omega was both cool and kind of lame.

The lame part comes in that most of it was just advertising for three new titles. Valkyrie could be a cool series. I may have to at least get the first issue or two. The Loki and Punisher series just look kind of meh.

The cool part was the stuff between Heimdall and Daredevil. The discussion between them was cool. The art for that part was kick ass. And I really hope they keep those kick-ass looking fighting sticks Heimdall gave to Daredevil. Those need to be a permanent part of his continuity.

The new Thor issue was equally cool. I epsecially loved the parts with Hel and Karnilla, and how they are going to punish Malekith. Forom what I'm reading, though, it looks like the next issue will be the last for this series. Looks like they're following it up with a King Thor miniseries, then...? I don't know.

All in all, I've come to think of Jason Aaron as one of the better writers in the industry today. Certainly better than some of the folks who get talked about more. If Marvel would let him, I'd love to see him write Captain America. I'd buy that series.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of Iron Man. I know Dan Slott was doing the writing (not a great job), but Gail Simone took over for the two issues tying into War of the Realms. Not sure if she's continuing, or if Slott is getting it back.

Personally, I'd prefer if Slott wasn't brought back.

Scarab Sages

...Hither came Conan the Gambler!

The Marvel Conan books continue to be awesome.

Scarab Sages

Marvel Comics Presents just keeps getting better.

The Wolverine story finally introduced what a previous issue hinted at...Wolverine's daughter! She's got bone claws like him, but hers appear to be mystically powered. Cool. And the second time this month they've put something out hinting that Wolverine has more descendents out there. Makes sense, for someone who's lived as long as he has.

The Deadpool story was a nice little make-fun-of-the-nineties tale. Pretty sure the owner of the comic book shop was meant to be an homage to that Simpsons character Comic Book Guy.

The Ghost Rider story was cool, although I wasn't familiar with the villain. Nice to see Dan Ketch again. I like to think of him as "my Ghost Rider" since I collected his series from issue one. Blaze was before my time. I never collected anything with the chick Ghost Rider. I started to collect the Robbie Reyes GR, but didn't like the writing and stopped. The Reyes version was awesome on TV, though.

Scarab Sages

Damnit! Now I'm out of new comics to read for this week. And next week is looking...thin. Only three titles.

Scarab Sages

For the first time in a long time, I'm seriously considering collecting something X-Men that is not Wolverine. I've heard good things from the guys at my comic book store about the new X-books being done by Hickman. I trust their judgment.

Well covering the ground because I don't want the Zombie to feel like no one is listening... ;)

With regards to Sue Storm's mini-series, I am looking forward to it mostly because I think it suits her power set AND she'll have some other sort of super spies helping her. (If that last panel with Black Widow is any indication.)

I'll admit, I skipped Wolverine versus Blade because I didn't see the point...but I did read Captain America and Wolverine because I am interested in more Weapon Plus stuff. Which I'm glad to say this did well AND you're right, they'll be getting probably a series of one shots about it later on.

With Dan Slott's Iron Man...I don't think we'll be seeing him not be on this book if only because it's clear someone in the Marvel editorial feels they need to do something with Tony now that his MCU counterpart is dead.

War of the Realms Omega was a mixed bag (especially the Punisher part that I didn't feel I needed...even though I've seen the solicits for it) But I also agree, Heimdall and Daredevil's talk/panels were a real treat, ESPECIALLY with his new Yggdrasil sticks.

What I really liked about Thor is that it took everything I loved about Thor and smooshed together in a such a way that now we're seeing the end results of Jason Aaron's vision, not just for Thor, but the future of the Marvel Comic book universe/616. Also in the beginning, my CE Death Cleric of Orcus self was like “This isn't bad” when it was hinted at...then when I saw what Hela and Karnallia were ACTUALLY going to do...that side of me was “Yeah that's right.” Finally I don't think Jason is going to stop writing Thor so much as he's finishing this arc that will set UP King Thor in such a way that people will remember. I mean until someone else comes along...

I'm not sure Jason ready to do Cap JUST yet since Coates is still doing his slow but decent run on Cap...which is pretty much par for the course after Black Panther.

Conan's books are always interesting to me, and this one is of particular interest since while I knew he was a thief...his history of gambling didn't make sense until just now.. sort of.

I can't comment on the Marvel Presents since I didn't read it and probably will wait until it's collected anyway...

With regards to Hickman's X-men run...it can't be much worse than what's come before.

As for the DC side...The whole thing for Year of the Villain is just kind of tired after all the stuff that happened with the Death of Darkseid and the Injustice League showing up...Leviathan Event...I'm still unclear what to make of that.

I stopped reading most of Hawkman after the whole Deathbringers stuff...but I might pick it back up again later. I tried to be interested in Batman and the Spectre....but I find I'm just done with supernatural threats that Batman should just hand off to Justice League Dark or someone else...

Scarab Sages

A new Vampirella series is set to start this week. I've never collected that before, but for some reason the idea is appealing to me.

Scarab Sages

Otherwise, it's gonna be a slow week. Only three Marvel titles coming up.

Slower than last week? Sure. But the previews for Hickman's new books look VERY good, A-zombie. I highly recommend you check it out.

Scarab Sages

Well, the Punisher Annual was...disappointing. Basically a rip-off of the Venom movie plot, but with the Brood in place as bad guys. Maybe for the next annual, that sorry excuse for a writer can rip off one of the actually Punisher movie story lines.

Scarab Sages

Daredevil and Immortal Hulk were both cool.

I loved the dinner party discussion in Daredevil. I've found those kinds of dialogues a very integral part of the character, and the current writing hasn't disappointed. I look forward to where they're going with the Owl, as well as how long they'll keep Kingpin as a corrupt politician rather than an outright crime lord.

Hulk was a cool story, focusing on this replacement for Thunderbolt Ross. Looks like Fortean is going to be the new Abomination. Hopefully, Puck and some of the others aren't really dead.

I doubt much of the new Gamma Flight is actually dead. Mostly because I think Fortean didn't want to waste bullets on them. Now whether Doc Samson and Walter are dead...unclear.

But yeah other than the ending, the Punisher Annual wasn't that much to get interested in.

Scarab Sages

Forgot to mention, I did end up getting the first new Vampirella issue. It was decent. Priest is doing the writing, so that's part of the reason I picked it up.

Scarab Sages

Haven't picked up my new books for this week yet. Most likely I'll go tomorrow. Really looking forward to History of the Marvel Universe.

House of X is a maybe. I hear good things about it from the folks at my comic book shop.

Valkyrie is also a maybe, but only because Jason Aaron and Al Ewing are working it.

Scarab Sages

Thinking more on the shift in my collecting from less DC to more Marvel, I wonder if the shift in story quality came from the Marvel change in Editor in Chief

A-zombie,

That might be part of it. What I DO think is happening (at least on the X-men side) is having Hickman's vision for the X-men be more than just "reboot after a reboot." feels more...cohesive.

Anyways I think you'll agree House of X is great.

Valkyrie is cool but I'm still a bit miffed about Brunnihidle's demise.

Scarab Sages

I think I'm finally ready to give up on the most recent iteration of Iron Man. I was never crazy about them making him adopted, or bringing in Arno Stark and making him the real son of Howard and Maria. It just seems...lame. And this whole AI rights subplot, while interesting, is being dragged out way too much.

Valkyrie #1 - I was hoping for something good. Aaron and Ewing did not disappoint. The first issue was well-written and well drawn. And they brought in Blue Streak. I always love when obscure characters are used. I like the way the weapon changes to suit her needs. It reminds me of something they did year ago in DC's Hawk and Dove. I hope Heimdall's not dead for good. I did not see Bullseye coming, but it's nice to see him fight someone other than Daredevil. I like the idea of all these magical weapons left over from the war and falling into the wrong hands. It's a nice variation on the theme. Looking forward to seeing where they go with this.

Doctor Strange was...interesting. For some reason, I enjoyed seeing uber-Galactus chew up so many universal bad asses. Of course Strange had a plan. I hope he and Clea end up back together. It's weird seeing them not a couple.

Scarab Sages

As a brief follow-up, I consider Al Ewing and Jason Aaron to probably be two of the better writers in the comic book industry today. Which is good for me. I'm not sure how many writers are younger than me whom I actually like, but I can always use more of them.

Scarab Sages

The Batman Beyond story with False Face is getting a bit silly. Once they knew this dude was loose, it still took way too much of Terry not acting like himself for Bruce to realize what was going on. Still, as previously stated, I love when writers use some of the more obscure characters, so this is fun.

I loved the new issue of Detective. It wa a nice little Joker one-shot, and had some amusing little bits with Batman accompanying Joker through the carnival, playing along until he could figure out how to rescue the hostages. The three panels of the them on the ferris wheel, bumper cars, and tunnel of love were awesome.

Scarab Sages

House of X was pretty damned cool. It's been forever and a day since I read any X-Men stuff, or been deeply involved with Marvel comics, so I'm only vaguely familiar with some of the characters and organizations they name.

The writing was outstanding. The art was really impressive. Marvel Girl looks awesome. I thought Banshee was dead. Professor X is apparently in the body of Fantomex. Doug seems to be part normal, part Warlock. Giant Master Mold head on a space station (but they call it "her").

I like the whole set-up of them using Krakoa as their own nation and establishing colonies/embassies using it's seeds. Not sure who that was on Mars.

The confrontation between Cyclops and the FF was interesting. You could almost see the thoughts running through Cyclops head abut whether he would take them on. That little parting shot directed at Franklin was....promising.

I love the idea of Iceman, the X-Men I thought was long treated as kind of a joke (or at least second-rate) as being one of the few Omega Level mutants.

Magneto is still kind of a dick.

I wish we'd seen more of some of the other X-Men.

All in all, I look forward to the rest of both mini-series.

Scarab Sages

The first issue of History of the Marvel Universe was cool. Lots of stuff in there. And there's actually an overarching story running through it. Neat.

I tend to ignore history issues since the history keeps changing...but for the sake of "Well it is Mark Waid..." So that helped.

But yes, while you might not recognize SOME of what Hickman is doing...for me it builds off many decent runs along with fixing some recent problems X-men have had thanks to Bendis.

I also agree that Al Ewing is KILLING it on Immortal Hulk. Jason Aaron's Avengers run has been good too.

I think the major problem with Iron Man, now is everyone has seen RDJ...and they don't know how else to do it. Part of it is because of the movies...the other part is honestly after doing so much bleeding edge tech (and some rather questionable cross-over stuff via Bendis), there's not much left to mine for Tony RIGHT now.

Jane Foster as Valkyrie is pretty good, but I have to say I wish they had picked someone else as the antagonist...but I guess when it's 'We need a killer merc" and you can't get Deadpool...I guess "Lester" is your best choice.

As for DC, I pretty much skipped over Dectective Comics. I don't feel it's gotten better, even with a one shot. But I will agree that using False Face in a future setting is better.

Scarab Sages

Reading through the most recent Marvel and DC previews books, there were some interesting things to come.

On the Marvel side - NEW GHOST RIDER!!! WOOT!! With Johnny Blaze and Dan Ketch!! Looking forward to that. Also, they had what looked like it could be interesting - Bizarre Adventures. And, of course, some of those new X-books look intriguing.

On the DC side, three things caught my eye, only two of which I'll probably get: The Batman's Grave (maxiseries by Warren Ellis), and a one-shot called Secrets of Sinister House. The third thing was the new Metal Men series, but as soon as I saw it was being written by that asshat Didio, it was put on the "crap I won't touch" list.

Scarab Sages

Death's Head was....weird. Which is kind of what I was expecting, so no disappointment there. Not sure who these two young super heroes he's interacting with are. Probably from those years when I avoided a lot of Marvel books like the plague they were.

Fantastic Four was cool. I wish they hadn't included that Future Foundation back-up, as I'd much rather have seen more Hulk/Thing action. As much as I love Hulk, I really hope Thing kicks the living crap out of him in the next issue.

Powers of X was really cool. Love seeing Nimrod again - the old-school version more than the drone version. The Chimera program sounded interesting. And now I'm really wondering what's on that thumb drive Mystique brought back to Magneto and Xavier.

A-zombie,

The young heroes are former members of the Young Avengers, specifically Billy Kaplan (who may or may not be a mutant and/or be the son or at least possess the soul of Wanda Maximoff's kid with Vision) and Teddy Altman, the son of Mar'vell (the first Captain Marvel of Marvel) and the Skrull Princess, Anelle.

With regards to Powers, I'm still waiting to see how this all plays out. It reminds me of SHIELD in terms of playing along different time frames...but I am interested to see how that shakes out.

And yes the new Ghost Rider will be something to see, especially once the Avengers finish helping the newest Ghost Rider.

Scarab Sages

Issue #2 of Last Knight on Earth was okay. The story is interesting, though nothing spectacular. The art is pretty damned cool though.

The new issue of Marvel Comics Presents was....meh. The Wolverine story is starting to drag a little, but it seems maybe next issue will be the last. The Winter Soldier story was okay. The Iron Man story was utter crap. Hopefully, they won't let that dude write too much more s%+~. Maybe just keep him confined to that Squirrel Girl s*#@.

Last Knight on Earth is pretty much what I expect from Snyder writing Batman. It's not Grant Morrison level of weird...but it's still pretty weird at times.

Scarab Sages

Movie review time, but I'll put it here since it's comic book related.

Watched the animated Batman: Hush last night. It was interesting. They cut out certain parts of the original comic book story, I'm assuming to make the plot a little tighter and more straight forward. Either way, it worked. I enjoyed it.

The animation was decent enough. It was never going to be as awesome as Jim Lee's art, but it was still pretty good.

The voice casting was cool. Jason O'Mara has been okay as Batman, although nowhere near as awesome as Conroy. Jennifer Morrison was pretty good as Cat Woman (although she's no Adrienne Barbeau). And, after checking IMDb, I realized the voice actor for Riddler was the drugged out college kid from the opening sequence of Super Troopers. "The snozberries taste like snozberries!"

The bonus material was a mixed bag. There was one Cat Woman centric episode from the old Batman animated series - awesome as always. And that episode also had Scarface and the Ventriliquist, another great addition to the the Bat rogue's gallery.

The big highlight of the bonus content, however, was an animated short featuring Sgt. Rock and the Creature Commandos. It was awesome!! They had Karl Urban doing the voice of Sgt. Rock, and now I want to see him do a live action Sgt. Rock movie.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Karl Urban is just the man.

Also no one can touch Conroy's Batman. Which is probably why the CW is hiring him to do Bruce Wayne.

Scarab Sages

The new Doom Patrol series continues to be just as weird as the previous one. The stories are just odd ball enough to keep me slightly interested, but I don't think Way knows where he's going with this. Not sure I'll keep it up.

Punisher continues to be dragged on and on. They brought in two of my other favorite characters, however, Ghost Rider (Danny) and Moon Knight. The short exchange between Castle and Spector was pretty cool. Still, the drag is getting bad enough that I'm going to remove the series from my list. I would say I'd maybe let them finish this story arc first, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. The "writer" has pretty much proven to me he sucks balls and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a comic ever again. He'll likely go on my list of writer's whose books I avoid like the plague.

Savage Avengers is starting to drag a bit as well, but it's only issue #4, so I'll give them a break for now. The artwork is pretty cool. And I do like seeing Brother Voodoo again. If you ask me, his time as Sorcerer Supreme was way too short.

Scarab Sages

I was speaking with one of the employees at my comic book store the other day. He's just a few years younger than me, so we've both got a good many years invested in comics. He's a good guy.

Anyway, we were talking yesterday about modern versus older comics, and one thing he mentioned was that modern comics seem to have moved away from the "book" part of "comic book". You hardly ever see thought bubbles anymore, and not as much exposition as back in the day. The art is being used to do more and more work. It was a good point, and one I happen to agree with.

Going back through the older books in my collection (books put out in the late 80s and early 90s) you can definitely see a big difference in the amount of words. I think you got more out of the story with that.

I also think there are a lot of modern writers who'd never be able to hack it if we went back to that kind of comic book.

I miss thought bubbles.

Scarab Sages

Going a bit further on this, I think modern comics are doing a disservice to their younger customers by cutting back on dialogue, thought bubbles and exposition in general.

I have a very extensive vocabulary. I don't utilize it as often as I can (especially these days) but it's there nevertheless. A large percentage of the credit for that goes to the comic books I started collecting 30+ years ago. The first series I collected was Marvel's G.I. Joe. Among other early ones were The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League, Flash, the Millenium miniseries, Doctor Strange. All of these had heavy sci-fi and/or fantasy elements, even G. I. Joe (which also had it's fair share of military terminology). I won't say my vocabulary wouldn't have been as extensive if I hadn't read comics, but they were definitely an influence.

He is indeed. I wish he'd make another Judge Dredd movie.

I do agree that this new crew that Punisher got to help him (though he was unwilling to do so) is good, ESPECIALLY because he's got Night Thrasher, Moon Knight and of course, Danny Ketch, one of the better Ghost Riders. But I'm mostly just in a holding pattern on that.

Savage does need to clean up some stuff...but at least, as you pointed out, it has Brother Voodoo is clearly the most under-rated magic user in Marvel.

Scarab Sages

I really liked the new issue of Daredevil, especially the opening sequence with Matt Murdock and Reed Richards playing chess and talking God. Very well written. Not sure I'm liking the affair between Matt and the still very married mob wife. The art continues to kick ass.

Scarab Sages

Issue #2 of House of X was really cool. I liked the redefining of such a long running character as Moira MacTaggert. And the way they did it has a definite effect, while at the same time fitting nicely with most of previous X-men history.

The part with Destiny was really cool. The way they wrote it, she and Destiny are actually very similar in power. Both have abilities that are mostly passive, but can be used to devastating effect. I would say that Destiny was the more powerful of the two, however, and maybe even approaching Omega Mutant level.
