Where do the newbies play?

Advice

I've been pondering Pathfinder - playing on and off, when I can find a group - for 2, nearly 3 years now, and I still feel like a woefully inadequate newb wherever I go. I feel like the weak link in any chain, the one they laugh at and ridicule and tell to gtfo.

Where do the newbs play? I know a number of others who are even more green then me, eager to play, but no idea what constitutes a game. None of us are remotely fit to GM. How do we get started?

(I live in a very small town; there are no local games here, and all of the friends I speak of are people I know only online.)

If your answer comes from Google or Youtube, be advised I'm likely to say "I've seen this before, and it hasn't helped." Please be patient with me. I know I'm a fool. I need far more help then anyone should ever be expected to. I'm ashamed to come here, or anywhere, asking anyone for anything, but I'm at wit's end.

you can do one of 3 things 1) get together with irl friends and play that way, 2) go to roll20 and see if you can find a game there, or 3 search to see if your town or a nearby town has a game your interested in joining

This place is a ghost town. Finding one person who knows what Dungeons and Dragons is is almost impossible. Odds that I find an agreeable one who can deal with my newbishness? Probably 0.

Roll 20 is almost as bad, in the opposite way. There's so much going on, and almost all of it is seasoned veterans who want nothing to deal with me, whether they know it or not. "Newcomers welcome," say the signs, but in time, I manage to prove there are exceptions, and I'm one of them.

Sovereign Court

Probably easier to get started on sites like rpol or mythweavers then, usually people are patient on pbp type.

The Exchange

Is it roll20 use or pathfinder rules? I am looking into trying roll20 for future games but am alittle intimidated by the whole macro thing.

I've run a game or two here on Paizo's forums in play-by-post for new players. I know I've seen other GMs do this also. My plate is quite full right now, but you could keep your eyes out for other GMs recruiting a beginners game.

Don't give up on roll20, plenty of DMs like to show new players the ropes. Truth is, as a GM it can be nice to have a new player since veterans (not all, holster your pitchforks) can have some very specific and special ideas in mind of what they want to play.

A newcomer most often chooses a good ol' standard race and standard class and there will be a LOT less rules discussing during sessions.

Have you tried making a post in their LFG forum? Explain you being new and wanting to get into it. Usually you'll get replies and my tip to you is: Don't be afraid to turn down the first few offers if they don't feel right for you.

Newbs tend to be spread out and mixed in with other players.

If your level of newbishness is bothering you just ask for help with the build on something relatively straight forward. PFS newb to pro

Discord channel. Lots of people Many newbs about, but they also tend to be some of the fastest learners. *sniff* the little munchkins grow up so fast...

Do you have any local friends who you could invite to play? You could teach them.

Barring that, move to a different town or be prepared to travel further to play. One of the guys in my Sunday groups drives 30+ miles.
