Beast Rider Cavalier giving medium players Medium mounts?!?

Rules Questions

So the beast riders ability reads:

Beast Rider wrote:

Medium beast riders can choose a camel or horse mount at 1st level. At 4th level, a Medium beast rider can also choose an allosaurus, ankylosaurus, arsinoitherium, aurochs, bison, brachiosaurus, elephant, glyptodon, hippopotamus, lion, mastodon, megaloceros, giant snapping turtle, tiger, triceratops, or tyrannosaurus as his mount. Additional mounts might be available with GM approval.

In addition, a 7th-level or higher Medium beast rider can select any creature whose natural size is Large or Huge, provided that creature is normally available as a Medium-sized animal companion at 7th level (like a bear). To generate statistics for such a mount, apply the following modifications:

Small problem, most of those are medium creatures and the cavalier is a mounted class.... get the mount at level 4 can't use it until level 7..... WTF i just want to ride a triceratops without being a small creature...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Take the Undersized Mount feat? It lets you ride a Medium mount.

You can always retrain out of it once your mount is naturally Large.

You will want to increase its carrying capacity. It won't be able to hold your weight and charge otherwise.

medium mount for a medium character will suffer real carrying issue.

Nothing stopping you from also just flanking with your mount until 7th. You will have moments where you're not mounted, so having a good fighting companion is honestly a boon.

Otherwise, yeah, just stick to horses until 7th. They're usually pretty good anyway.

One thing you'll need to appreciate is that every single animal companion except for horses and camels start as medium or smaller. They are the exception to the vast majority of animals choices simply because they are the default mount animal companion and medium creatures need a mount option. Beast-rider only provides the option to take different animals for a mount, which normally a cavalier cannot choose, but opens the option from them to have flank partners instead.

Or, in the case of small cavaliers, a cooler mount.

which of those are medium? I know horse and probably camel are large, def the lion/tiger is large and probably the elephant/mastodon is bigger, the hippopotamus probably at least large - unless the Animal companions versions start out as smaller?
Looks like Horse/camel are large at lvl 1 and everything else is medium until lvl 7 - looks like your choice is either to start medium and get permanent reduce person at lvl 4 or not be mounted lvls 4-6 OR be small and not have a mount lvls 1-3 (or if you can somehow get it frequent enlarge person) then mount the medium creature at lvl 4 and at lvl 7 get permanent enlarge person

The lion and tiger start out as medium until level 7.
