i need a hole in the ground that is a teleport / portal / trap to some place with fire

hi,
in an encounter i'm planing for the group i DM in my home-brew adventure
i need the main villain to make a hole in the ground (5-10 feet radius) that seems to be opening into someplace with flames
and few creatures like burning skeletons and alike to emerge from it

what sort of npc could do this and using what spells
i need the lowest lvl of npc that is able to do something like that.

it should depend on the caster so if he gets killed then the hole should close

i know how the scene is supposed to look but i'm missing the necessary spells and abilities/feats that allow an npc to do that
and any other "rules" related stuff, like for how long can it hold it
would it need to concentrate for it and if so what can disrupt it

and in general how to go about turning something like that , that i have in mu vision and turn it into something that will adhere to the rules

Well, it sounds like you are using a Gate spell... which is 9th level.
You could substitute with a Summon Monster or Summon Nature's Ally since they basically portal there. Summon fire creatures to add to your "flaming portal" description like a Fire Beetle.
There is also the Versatile Summon Nature's Ally OR Versatile Summon Monster feats to add "Fiery" templates to resemble creatures from the Plane of Fire.

A low level Druid or Summoner should work just fine.


Gate is the only RAW way of doing what your asking. Scroll with skill focus(UMD)? By raw individuals can research custom spells and create custom items. Of course this is dm fiat by another name

Summoner with Versatile Summon Monster to summon them? There's no actual description of how summoning looks, so a 1 round, 1 way portal to the plane of fire can serve as the visual image of the spell, with the monster crawling through, rather than suddenly appearing.


Fireproofed portable hole with whatever you want in it.
