Bartender Priest of Cayden Cailean

Hey there Groupmind,

So.. I've been tossing around the idea of a Human Cleric/unarmed combatant priest of Cayden Cailean for PFS. Someone that doesn't need a weapon (so monk/brawler) but can still make an effective cleric.

But I need ideas.

My initial build was Brawler 1st level, Cleric (Divine Paragon) for level 2, but I'm not sure it will work the way I imagine.

What I want is the big, surly barkeep with the muscles to take on most rowdy patrons and the wisdom and personality to be the go-to person to tell your ails to as he pours you shots.

Seems simple.

Ideas?

I know there are some feats and items for fighting with a mug

A bad touch cleric build might work

There's a warpriest archetype that grants monk abilities

Dipping a level in Umonk gives much of what your looking for

A possibility is taking a level of Brawler Fighter with the Blade and Tankard Divine Fighing Technique http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/divine-fighting-technique-combat /. Read the overall feat description, then Blade and Tankard style. Notice that instead of taking the feat, you can simply trade out your proficiency with shields to gain the initial benefit of using a mug in combat. Unarmed Strikes are light weapons and thus qualify for the purposes of the feat.

Well, there are alternate rules that let you create alcohol using your create water cantrip. So that is a good start.

Is your fist the only way you wish to win or are you open to combinations of magic, powers, and fist?

Alchemist. Pour drinks that are elixirs or whatever they call them. Make potions. Give them out. Get roaring drunk on your mutagens. Poison resistance helps with your alcohol tolerance. Call your tumor familiar "Your Liver." Set your liquor on fire and toss them at your foes.

Warpriest or just brawler. Make your deity a flavor choice.

Honestly, this sounds like a great archetype. Write something and post it in the homebrew forum.

Cleric with alchemy subdomain into Brewkeeper PRC. Turn your spells into healing potions. Use your own actions if you want to heal guys. Also can use all the potion support stuff for move and swift action spells. Drink up

What does the Alchemy domain do for Brewkeeper?

Sacred Fist Warpriest?

Or Brawler? 1 Level Dip or Full on Brawler.

What Abilities other than Improved Unarmed Strike are you looking for? This way we can look at narrowing it down for you. There are plenty of classes that would fit this as well as a multiclass build or two.

In PFS your not going to get the chance to RP as a bartender. You will roll a profession check but all your adventuring is in the field as a Pathfinder.

You have a backstory or and a personality, but don't really seem to defined on what you want to do in the game. Depending on that answer, your 'best' build could be radically different.

For example, 'able to take on most rowdy customers' could be achieved with probably just a 14 STR and nothing else. Unless your customers pull a weapon or you want to kill them, you don't need improved unarmed strike. So that would satisfy your background just fine. If you want unarmed combat to be something your character does once in a while when adventuring you probably need the feat. If you want punching out monsters to be the main thing you do, you will need higher strength, the feat (or equivalent) and probably some other class features.

In my experience, while having a good backstory is a great place to start, if you don't think about what you want to actually be doing in the game, you often end up with an unsatisfying character.

Some options though that would fit your general idea

Sense Monk (definitely gives advice, fights unarmed)
Vanilla Cleric (possibly with imp. unarmed strike)
Evangelist Cleric (focusing on the 'advice' and 'preist')
Sacred Fist Warpriest
Any Brawler or Monk Build (mostly just being unarmed fighter guy)
Bard (obvious synergy with Cayden, imp unarmed strike probably as feat)

Really you could achieve the basic backstory with just about any class.
