Help me build a Lizardfolk Unchained Summoner.

Advice

I really have no clue what to do beyond this:

Lizardfolk get +2 STR, +2 CON, and +2 natural armor with a bite usable as a secondary attack. They are built to be melee characters. Ergo, this character will go into melee.

Eidolon choice is Ancestor, thus benefiting from the +2 STR/CON/Nat Armor. Ancestor Eidolon takes the Fighter Creature template and wields a Pickaxe (1d8 P with a x4 crit). There's a reason for this story-wise (their tribe was enslaved), but there's a build reason that should be evident momentarily. Eidolon takes typical Power Attack and smashy smashy stuff.

Summoner takes Combat Expertise, and Improved Critical, but most importantly Butterfly Sting. Also gets Power Attack and stuff so he can do decent melee damage, but the point remains: he's the crit fisher in the pair. Once he fishes the crit, the Eidolon rushes in and murders the enemy.

However, I notice some pretty big problems here.

1. The summoner doesn't start with Martial Weapon proficiency. Should he just grab it via a dip? (This weakens the Eidolon, and Boon Companion doesn't work on them.) Take it as a feat? Or maybe just use a 19-20 weapon instead?

2. What does the summoner even grab after he gets that ability?

3. Ugh, that spell list is really small and unsatisfying. Should we focus on buffs like Barkskin and then wade into the fight?

4. Really, how would you build the summoner himself? The Eidolon seems easy to build with this setup; just make it smashy. You could build the summoner smashy too, but he can't wear medium or heavy armor, and he needs at least 13 INT. (Thankfully, this is 25 point buy for the campaign I'm considering joining.) I honestly have no clue after "butterfly sting hehehehe."

So... Yeah - what do? What do?

No thoughts? Perhaps my biggest question is "would a brief dip be worth it?" 1-2 levels, perhaps in Lore Warden for the three bonus feats + proficiency?

As far as crit fishing goes, I've recently been reminded that crossbows aren't terrible for this at low levels. And/or rather than taking Martial WP you could take Exotic WP and get a fauchard to use, which feels less like a wasted feat.

After you have cbt expertise, EWP, butterfly's sting and power attack your next feat is at level 9. You don't qualify for improved crit yet. Cornugon smash perhaps? Or Craft Magic Arms and Armor so you can get keen weapons cheaply? Lunge? All seem like decent options.

Yes, the spell list for the unchained summoner is terrible. PF Unchained wrapped the summoner in too much nerf IMO. Still besides the standard buffs there's evolution surge (lesser & greater) & rejuvenate eidolon (probably just lesser) and maybe glitterdust.

I don't think a dip is worth it for feats alone.

As Avr said, you're going to have to get your feats the hard way. Thankfully, the bonus feat from Ancestor's fighter style will help keep the Eidolon up to speed. Both you and the Eidolon should just bite the bullet and take the proficiency feats. After that, the Eidolon can take Power Attack and either Weapon Focus or Furious Focus to make sure your combo goes off.

Don't worry about Improved Critical. Get yourself a 18-20 crit weapon that you can make Keen.

Another good feat is Outflank. This can be taken at level 9 by both of you at the same time.

As for the spell list, even the APG version has a boring selection at low levels. I've made nearly a half dozen Summoners across various levels of PFS play and each spell level tends to end up with two key buffs, one solid control spell, and a utility spell. Since your DCs will be low, this further emphasizes your nature as a smashy buff bot. On the bright side, all of those buffs make you popular at tables and you get to skip spending money on some of the "Big Six" items. Another advantage is the Summon Monster ability. Even if the focus is your Eidolon, you may just need to mix it up, so don't neglect your versatility.

The "fun" part of the build kicks in at later levels, but the simple advantage of two Str-based bodies will be a huge benefit. That, more than teamwork shenanigans, will carry you through the most boring levels (1-3). Until then, focus on roleplaying your concept. Ancestor Eidolons are a really fun addition with lots of potential, so put a lot of through into the nature of your bond and how you can get other players involved.

Unless you're going mounted Summoner, dipping is practically a trap. You lose too many features and Unchained Eidolons are already a risky proposition due to there incredibly low HPs for a front liner.
