Soundstriker / ninja sneak attack

Rules Questions

I have a problem. My group and i are currently arguing about sneak attack. From what i have read about sneak attack, if im flanking an enemy and i go into weird words, it seems i would get a sneak attack bonus per word. Now my group disagrees, saying that sneak attack only applies to the first hit, no matter what the circumstances (even if your a ninja under greater invisibility). How does sneak attack work when attacking multiple times?

I'm not sure how sneak attack would work with weird words, but in general you can sneak attack on each attack in a round as long as the target is denied their dex bonus to AC. So if you are flanking or are under greater invisibility all of your attacks will have sneak attack added.

Can't be flanking if you're not using a melee weapon. Weird words aren't melee weapons so you can't be flanking when you attack with them. We have a FAQ to make that official.

But the normal rule for sneak attack is it applies to any attack that qualifies. If you have 4 attacks because you're a TWF rogue and you're flanking then all 4 of those attacks will have flanking damage on them.
If you're greater invis then all your attacks have sneak attack on them.

To gain sneak attack against a target you must be flanking them or they must be denied their dexterity bonus. If your attack meets both of those conditions, then you can apply your sneak attack bonus.

Also sneak attack can be used multiple times a round so your group is wrong anyways.

You cannot flank with ranged attacks though, so that is out. Greater Invisibility would work though.

Assuming you can qualify for sneak attacks I'd follow the principle from this FAQ allowing only 1 sneak attack on spells with simultaneous effects.

They changed Soundstriker. If the attacks hit one person it counts as just one attack, I think. I'd need to look at the underpowered mess again.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So many problems:

1) You can't gain flanking bonuses when making a ranged attack, period.

2) Weird words has massive errata.

3) If you could get sneak from some non flanking way, you'd only apply to one target once.

Doesn't 3 only apply to things like spells? Invisible Archers should be able to get sneak attack for each arrow.

3) applies to volleys and arrow shots are iterative attacks. Weird words is more like a volley.

My bad, I was thinking of greater invisibilty, not regular.

As a Supernatural Ability rather than a spell, Wierd Words would benefit from Sneak Damage on multiple attacks... if the errata didn't specifically make it so that every attack vs. one target is rolled into one attack.
