Minister Pain checking in, I couldn't find a thread for the best numbers, so I decided to make one instead.
My favorite number is seven(7).

28
A perfect number, since it is the sum of its divisors: 1+2+4+7+14=28).
Most perfect numbers are awesome. 28 has the virtue of being easy to check (but not too small like 6).

I must say, I find this fantastic. And there isn't even another one until 496!

What we know and don't know about perfect numbers is amazing. We still don't know if there are any odd ones (though there are so many constraints on what it would be like, people's instinct is that they don't exist).
We know that the even ones all end in ...6 or ...28 :)
I think we've only found less than 50 all up (and there are likely some gaps). The biggest ones we know are monumental.
From memory, it's still an open question whether there's an infinite number of them (which is an unsettling thing to not know, as a mathematician!)

They get pretty huge, pretty quickly.

16
I like both four and eight, but sixteen is the perfect combination of the two, being both four times itself, and eight plus itself. Also, if you stop a microwave on 16, you're 44 seconds from a minute.
For some reason I've always liked the number 75. I have no idea why.
In this crowd, no one mentioned 42? I am surprised.
Incidentally, 6x9=42 works in base 13.

I don't speak mathematics. If it's not base 10 I'm hamstrung. The ancient Sumerians used a base 12 system, if I recall correctly. That boggles my mind.
