Multiclassing in general

Rules Questions

So, I'm running a gnome witch right now at lv. 11, and want to advance to Technomancer. I'm wondering how I can get there, more specifically, how to get the trained skills to get there.

Question 1: Do I need to multiclass into it, or can I gain it through feats?

Question 2: Do you get the class skills from multiclassing, or do those come only when you start with that class?

I'm going to assume you mean the Technomancer Prestige Class from the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Technology Guide.

Like all prestige classes, you can begin taking levels in Technomancer as soon as you mean the qualification requirements. The general rule regarding Prestige Classes is here. Based on what you've said, I believe that means you have to multi-class into it (your terminology).

Technomancer Qualifications wrote:

To qualify to become a technomancer, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Feats: Skill Focus (Knowledge [engineering]), Technologist.

Skills: Disable Device 6 ranks, Knowledge (engineering) 6 ranks, Spellcraft 6 ranks.

Special: Ability to cast 3rd-level arcane spells.

So you need two feats and at least 6 ranks in three different skills, as well as the ability to cast 3-rd level arcane spells. Those skills do not have to be class skills at all, but you DO need the ranks. If you have all of these qualifications, then your next new level may be Technomancer. If you have all of the qualifications right now and take your 12th level as Technomancer, you'd be a Witch 11 / Technomancer 1. Once you do take a level of Technomancer, if one of your existing skills that was not a class skill now is, then you immediately gain the bonus (although your ranks don't change unless you use the skill points gained from that new level to add to them).

Having a class skill just means you get a +3 bonus when you invest your first rank in that skill, anyone can put their skill points towards any skill they want (except Fly). So just put your skill points when you level up into the relevant skills until you meet the prerequisites, then you can take your first level in Technomancer.

Then adding to this. Do I need 6 ranks in the skill, or 12 because of the "two points to untrained skills = one rank" thing?

Also, the questions are referring to multiclassing with any class. Not just prestige.

That isn't a rule. 6 ranks = 6 ranks.

Another question: Which class gives me the skills when I level one up. Does it go by which one I leveled?

I really don't understand what you are asking. Can you give a specific example?

I think there is some 3.5 confusion going on here.
In pathfinder you get one skill rank when you put in a skill point regardless of whether it is a class skill or not.

You get skills and abilities in the class you level in not in the classes you do not.

I'm running a half-elf cleric, with a second favored class as rogue. I started cleric, and am multiclassing into the rogue at the next level. Do I get the rogue skill ranks for leveling up, or do I stay with cleric?

You get whatever the class you just took a level in gives. BaB, HD, skills, class skills, proficiencies, abilities appropriately for that level of class, etc.

That helps. The class that you level up in determines the number of Skill Ranks that you get at the level.

Your level of Cleric gave you 2 + (Int Mod) Ranks.
Your level of Rogue will give you 8 + (Int Mod) Ranks.

So you will have a total of 10 + 2*(Int Mod) Ranks.

Yeah, the favored class mechanic is a little different in Pathfinder. They replaced the multiclassing penalties with bonuses for singleclassing - or in the case of a half-elf, bonuses for doubleclassing (which may not be a real word).

If your favored classes are cleric and rogue, and your levels are cleric 1/rogue 1, you would get 2 favored class bonuses - each can be either +1 hp, or +1 skill rank.
