Seeking Optimized-ish 5th Level Evangelist build

Advice

I'm looking for a build for a 5th Level Evangelist.

The world is a tough one by a GM who throws fairly nasty critters at us so this guy has to be somewhat durable himself and help keep the crew stay alive and buffed.

All published Paizo except Unchained allowed. Twenty point buy. Two or three adventure nights with no leveling. Four other people in group with little to no hope of knowing what they've built till after we start.

I've never played an Evangelist before, so I'm looking for feats, spell combos, tactics and strategy. I'll try to monitor this thread regularly so please ask any questions ASAP.

Umm, I don't think you can go evangelist till level 6 (requiring one of three ways to get into, all min level 5).

The thing to remind you is that evangelist is by its nature an "add-on" to another class. You basically will play the same (A cleric like a cleric, a fighter like a fighter, etc...)

For what it is worth I would avoid a Full BAB class, however it works well with 1/2 BAB classes, and okay with 3/4 BAB IMO

Think he meant the cleric archetype.

On topic: I don't have any major insight into the archetype specifically, but I think a Caster cleric build will pretty much cover you. You can't dump charisma, and you'll probably want to pick up Lingering performance, but otherwise I don't think there's any particularly special considerations. You could make a pretty solid enchantment specialist with that modified spontaneous casting, so Spell Focus and whatnot could be worthwhile.

I don't think so, but maybe we're talking two different things. Evangelist archetype of Cleric is here.

To expand on what I said: you need to decide what class you are basing it on, make sure you take Deific Obedience, and choose your god carefully to accentuate your class such as Neithys for Arcane Casters

I think the key decision in cleric is whether you are going to be a pure caster or a martial fighter. There are builds for evangelist based on the reach cleric (high strength; longspear). There are builds based on summoning.

You will get better input if you give guidelines as to what you are looking for.

As an alternative, I really like the dawnflower anchorite prestige class. You won't get a "perform" type skill until 8th level, but it's a kind of neat prestige class.

oops sorry, there is also a Prestige Class

That I thought you were talking about

Good points, but I'm open to builds going either way- martial or caster-focused. Also, this guy will start and finish at 5th level.

Disregard, I was talking about the Prestige class

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, if you want to try a reach build @ level 5, I'd go human and pick up Lingering Performance, Combat Reflexes, Sacred Summons, and Improved Initiative. Be LG so you can summon Lantern Archons as a standard action, use that for 3rd level spell slots. Good domain helps with buffs (free magic circle against evil, and align weapon each day) or Growth subdomain of Plant for Enlarge Person to use with reach. You might consider swapping Improved Initiative for Flagbearer for a slightly heavier support role.

Evangelist can pick up an enormous amount of combat ability, but their performance stuff only truly kicks-in properly at level 7 when they don't need a standard action to begin it. Before that, they're gonna have to decide whether a party-wide buff is worth the action instead of a more powerful self-buff or a powerful spell (unless your GM is quite lenient with pre-buffing).

If you're willing to multiclass with one level of Sohei Monk, you can always go with Crusader's Flurry by level 5 for a fairly strong combatant that uses flurry with their deity's favored weapon with a pile of Cleric combat bonuses, and does it while wearing armor.

You can even make a pretty effective dual-wielding Evangelist with the combat buffs that they can stack up, since something like Heroism + Inspire Courage + Divine Favor will add up to a huge combat buff while wielding two weapons.

The choices are more or less as open and varied as with any other Cleric, except that their combat buffs are stronger than usual.

i love to mix melee and casting.
i mostly take channeling of negative energy, and channel smite + guided hand, power attack and from level 5+ go all caster feats.

you max out wisdom to be a super caster, buffer and ALSO great to hit and decent damage with power attack + bard song + divine favor.

Flagbearer is a decent feat to add the boosting.

the domain is highly important and here are a few good options:

Heroism (Gorum) : guided hand witha greatsword + heroism spell + add heroism to all around you and some good skill booster.

feather : animal comapnion with boon companion and improve share spells is a power doubele card.

Madness: great debuff power.

Luck : great buff power when not fighting.

Trade : 10' move + skills + D-door. very handy.

growth : swift enlarge person.

heroism and feather are my favorites.

Get Lingering performance, Flagbearer and Improved Initiative. Use a Longspear for your banner and you can function as a second line of attack from the rear while you give your buffs.
If you go human, I would use your extra feat for Toughness or Medium armor prof.
You will be giving a morale and a competence bonus to your pals, and if you cast prayer later you also add a luck bonus to the mix. You need to act fast to set your combo (although the flagbearer doesn't need an action to function, just stay on sight). The problem with this combo is that it doesn't truly shine till 7th level when you can inspare courage as a move action, allowing to set the combo in one round.

Another option is to pick up the animal domain and the boon companion feat. You will have an extra frontliner with the animal companion provided which can benefit greatly from your buffs with the share spell feature, let you focus on the spellcasting and buffs.

As an example of something a little more outlandish and rather fun, you could do something like...

Ragathiel's Sword-Champion
Urban Bloodrager 1/ Evangelist Cleric
Human: 15/17(+1)STR, 14DEX, 14CON, 10INT, 15WIS, 7CHA
Traits: Fate's Favored, Magical Knack
Domain: Anger Inquisition or Destruction/Rage

1UB. *Controlled Bloodrage (+2STR/+2DEX)* / *Fast Movement* / Two-Weapon Fighting / +Human: Quick Draw
2EC.
3EC. Extra Rage
4EC. [+1STR]
5EC. Heavy Armor Proficiency

--- and then...

6EC.
7EC. Double Slice or Extra Performance
8EC. [+1DEX]
9EC. Improved Two-Weapon Fighting

Controlled Bloodrage will allow you to use Inspire Courage while using Rage, and if you use it to add +2 to DEX along with +2 to STR, it's easy to activate the Two-Weapon Fighting feats. A Mithral Full Plate crossed with 17DEX will provide excellent protection, and will still let you move at normal speed thanks to Bloodrager Fast Movement.

As a Ragathiel Cleric you have proficiency with the bastard sword, so you can wield two Effortless Lace (only a -2 penalty for TWF with large weapons) equipped Furious bastard swords to mow-down opposition. With Quick Draw you can go from casting spells to dual-wielding without much trouble. Eventually, once it's easy to activate both Inspire Courage and Divine Favor in a single round, you can turn into a dual-bastard-sword-machine very efficiently, and the damage and accuracy with a combination of Rage, magic and Inspire Courage is hilariously brutal. By level 9, typical equipment and a pair of +1 Furious bastard swords can be dishing out over 20 damage per strike for 4-5 strikes on a full attack - and your accuracy will be easily comparable to a typical full martial character due to all of the buffs, and not needing Power Attack.

There's something about a disciple of a vengeance-deity hacking and slashing through foes with two very large swords while shouting out a battle-sermon in a controlled rage that just makes me smile.
