Runeforged Weapons

Rise of the Runelords

How does the ability from the Runeforged Weapon work exactly?
The party all have runeforged weapons now and we game this Saturday and they are at the last battle with Karzoug himself.

As long as the weapon is carried, it can absorb up to three harmful transmutation effects (such as baleful polymorph or petrification) inflicted on the wielder per day.

How does this work? Do I ask for a save and say it's a transmutation effect and they decide before the roll if that want to weapon to absorb it or after I tell them they fail, does it absorb it?

I'll be interested to hear what others say but I'm running this as the weapon absorbs the spell before it ever manifests, much like the Sihedron Circle absorbs spells and the spell effect never occurred. First three spells will go into the sword if they are wielding it.

That's basically what I'd do, Tom. If a PC has a dominant weapon, and they're targeted by a transmutation spell, it eats the spell without requiring any action or decision on the part of the character. Also, Karzoug knows of at least one dominant weapon in the party and is cognizant of the danger they represent, so I doubt he'd waste time casting transmutation spells on those PCs. While he can learn that as they encounter his minions and projected images in the Pinnacle of Avarice, he also has arcane sight and enough Spellcraft to basically know which people have dominant weapons and which don't once they're within 120' of him. Basically, after the first time they face his image, he should know which, if any, of the PCs are vulnerable to his most dangerous spells.

Case in point - the cleric/paladin of Ragathiel in my party decided that sin magic was bad and wanted nothing to do with a dominant weapon, so he's going into that fight a little less prepared. He's going to get hit with a flesh to stone or baleful polymorph early on.

That's my interpretation as well. It works like a rod of absorption (except no storage/re-use of energy.) If the pc's is targeted with a transmutation spell and the weapon is in hand, the spell is absorbed harmlessly. Until the spells per day limit is reached.

And I agree with Misroi, by the time the pc's reach the Eye, Karzoug should know exactly who has one and who doesn't. And he should have modified his memorization accordingly. If, as with my group, they all have one, he shouldn't have any attacking transmutation spells memorized - they're useless to him - he'll never have enough actions to spam his way through the absorption. Keep in mind he knows everything about runeforged weapons - that's why he was driving his minions to prevent anyone from figuring out how to make them/find the place where they could be made.

I agree with the above I assumed it even stopped spells like Disintegrate, as a result I had K use no offensive transmutation spells at all

That's basically how I ran it as well. Make note of the fact that the PCs don't/shouldn't get to decide if the spell is absorbed; the Dominent weapon does that automatically. Since Karzoug is smart, he could potentially use a number of area effect Transmutations early on to use up the 3/day absorption ability.
