GM granting a reroll to players

A while ago, I was playing in a game and a plot-important skill check came up. I rolled poorly, and the GM declared that he was granting me his reroll (with his GM star bonus). Later, I was hit with a save-or-die spell, and rolled very low. So, I tried to use the reroll granted from owning a character folio. I was told I couldn't reroll, because I was given one earlier by the GM. Looking at the free reroll rule, it says you only get one reroll for owning some official Paizo product (so no getting two rerolls for wearing a t-shirt and having a folio). Does this limit include the GM giving a reroll to a player?
(Presumably, this limit does not apply to rerolls granted by class features; if you had such an ability, a shirt would get you +1 rerolls to the number you could do per game)

I could not find the rules explaining GM granting rerolls to players.

Officially, GMs aren't allowed to give their reroll to other people unless they have a Campaign Coin, but it's not unusual for a GM to do so. But that means you aren't going to find official rules for it, since it isn't supposed to happen.

Even then, I've only seen it happen with players that don't have a reroll of their own. Did you have your folio prominently displayed, like you are supposed to throughout the game, or did you only pull it out when you wanted to reroll? Because if it was the latter, I suspect the GM thought he was being "nice" by giving you a reroll because he didn't realize you already had one.

also, even if the GM loans you his object to grant you a re-roll, it's not going to have his stars with it.

The reroll rules are here.

While it is possible you were seated at the table of a Campaign Coin recipient, it is not likely. That is the only way that the GM could have gifted you a reroll with their stars.

This is from the GM star reward boon (Swords)

Marcos Farabellus has taught you special techniques for acting with tactical precision even when working with an eclectic team. You may spend your free reroll (Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play 26) to allow another player to reroll one d20 roll using your GM star bonus, even if she has already used her own free reroll.

Its fairly common practice for DM's to loan a reroll item to a player that doesn't have one (fortunately my shirt will fit over just about anyone's clothes...) he probably thought you didn't have such an item and was letting you use it.

Good catch John. There might be quibbling about the GM not having a reroll to grant, but I say err on the side of the player.

That's also a bit of a 'gotcha' as presented here.

With limited information, the 'plot-point' roll that the GM wanted you to make shouldn't be also a guarantee of character death/suck, imo?

Otherwise, the possibility of malicious intent could be brought to play.

"Oh, this info roll is TRULY CRUCIAL! Here, I'll help you out!"

*character gets some possibly useful info*

Later in scenario:

"Oh, you failed the save versus Petrification and you're Level One? Oh, too bad! I *guess* you'll *have to create a new character*, then!"

What I suspect happened is closer to detailed above in-thread, and any GM that's contributed enough to the campaign to merit either that boon or the coin should probably in theory err on the side of the player -- ie, it wasn't the player who came up with that first 'extra roll', but the GM, because the GM wanted info out there for the party?

That being said, was not at the table, do not know the situation, and suggest an open dialogue with the GM first to resolve the issue in a fair and transparent fashion.

If it does not work via that means of discussion, consultation with one's Venture folks may be an option to consider?

I would say: It sounds like everyone's intentions were honorable here and that you have a good group.

Next time: Just say you do not want the GM reroll and that you are saving yours for something more important.

This time: I would let rules slide as it sounds like there was miscommunication between players and/or GM.

At a few cons I've GM'd at, where there are a bunch of new players, I've granted them each a free reroll. granted, it's people who haven't played Pathfinder and probably won't in the near future- and only at some cons. for my weekly games, ya- no free rerolls.

At PaizoCon last year, i gave another player my spare folio to enable a reroll, hoping his success would remedy a bad situation.

Seeing the responses, the GM was just mistaken about the nature of the GM "granting" rerolls to players.

The main portion of the scenario was a few days of activity where all the players had to make a series of very high-DC skill checks, and we needed a certain number of successes. With the granted reroll, we hit exactly that number; if we hadn't, several of the other players would have died.

I keep all my character paperwork in a pocket folder, and when I play, I use a whiteboard to take notes and track character status (HP, spell slots, class abilities with some kind of uses per day limit, etc), all of which I keep in a single stack to keep from taking up the entire table. So, if the folio was out, it would have been at the bottom of that stack.

So the DM kept as much of the group alive as possible

The rules were followed.

Could the group chip in for your res?
