Domain doesn't match Subdomain, what?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

According to Advanced Player's Guide, your chosen deity has to provide both the subdomain you want, and the affiliated domain for that subdomain. Well, currently I'm confused. One of Jezelda's subdomains is the Moon subdomain ... which associated with the Darkness domain... Jezelda's domains are Animal, Chaos, Evil, and Trickery. None of which are the Darkness Domain, OR are associated with the Moon subdomain.

What gives?

Some of the deities have access to a subdomain even though they do not have access to the main domain. Thus if Jezelda was your patron deity, you can take the Darkness Domain, but only by taking the Moon Subdomain.

That was the original ruling when Subdomains were introduced, but now it's you take the subdomain and the domain it modifies but you can't the original domain by itself.

So as a follower of Jezelda you can take the Moon modified Darkness domain, but you can't take the Darkness domain by itself.

Where can I find this rule? I always supposed that a "strange" subdomain modified one of the normal domains of the deity rather than its original domain.

"A cleric who chooses a subdomain must have access to both the domain and its subdomain from her deity."

The intent of that sentence was to let you know that you don't automatically have access to all of the subdomains under your deity's domain.

Yes, but that was "before" the concept of strange subdomains was introduced. I don't think that's the rule Rysky was speaking of.

To my knowledge it isn't written in any of the books, mostly because of how rare it is.

The Developers and Designers have said that is how it's supposed to work, which is backed up by making the most sense.

Where did they say it, please? I lost it and I would like to read what they said.

See Inner Sea Faiths.

Ah they did call it out in there, thanks Noh.

Oh! I found it now:

Inner Sea Faiths, page 3 wrote:
A character able to select a domain can take any subdomain granted by her divinity, even if the divinity does not also grant the subdomain’s associated domain. The character receives all the abilities and spells normally granted by taking that subdomain, including the domain powers of the associated core domain that aren’t replaced by the subdomain, even though the divinity cannot grant that core domain by itself.

Thank you both!

Ohh, so I can only choose the Darkness Domain with the Moon Subdomain this way, but not without? Also, strange follow-up question, as a Separatist Cleric of Jezelda, can I choose say... the Animal Domain, and also the Darkness Domain (Moon Subdomain) and everything remain valid?

Correct.

And I would say so.
