You always see one of these in heavily themed APs, but does anyone have any really good, eerie atmospheric music in mind for Strange Aeons? I'm asking as a player, in order to give more suggestions to my DM who has asked about setting the mood for a horror game beyond the nice tips offered by the Horror Handbook.

Alternatively, does anyone have any good media - TV shows and video games primarily - that they would say makes for some good supplementary experience going into a game like this? I've just finished re-watching the first season of True Detective and binge-watched Stranger Things over the course of a day, anything else in that area?

Shortly after our first report drops on the Paizo Blog (soon), we'll let everyone have access to the The Strange Aeons Experiment PDF, which has plenty of music in it that we've been listening to during our playthrough. In addition, we'll provide examples of what we used for ambiance and mood in our game; photos will be on both the Paizo Blog and our Facebook.

In the meantime, Mortagon put together a really great list there.

Hope it will help!

I would strongly recommend looking up the Shadows of Esteren albums.

Let's see.

Shadows of Esteren: Of Men and Obscurities
Shadows of Esteren: Rise
Shadows of Esteren: Dearg
Shadows of Esteren: Of Love and Fury

Shadows of Esteren is a medieval roleplaying game with a strong Celtic influence that has elements of horror, psychology, the supernatural and the unknown. You should be able to listen to some free samples here.

@3SecondCultist, Hey! I ordered the books so that I man DM, but haven't had a chance to read through them yet. I am SO excited for Strange Aeons, and the setting looks FANTASTIC.

There are two main things I suggest checking out before diving into this campaign.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Bloodborne: My players and I are HUGE fans of Bloodborne. The game dives DEEP into a lovecraftian horror experience with all the difficulties of dark souls. If you do not have the funds to go out and buy the game, I STRONGLY suggest watching a video put out by VaatiVidya. This video goes briefly into detail of the game's story and how it ties in with the Elder gods. Here's a link; Bloodbornes Story in 11 Minutes

--------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Outlast: Outlast is a horror game in which you are a reporter investigating some strange occurrences in an asylum. You go through the establishment seeing the tormented minds of those around you, and QUICKLY figure out that foul play is involved. Check out some gameplay videos of it on youtube. **NOTE: The game is QUITE disturbing at times, and is definitely not something you want to look up if you are sensitive to the horror genre.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
:D Hope you enjoy your experience! Hit me up with how the campaign is going sometime, I would love to hear about player experiences.

another thing, I think people are forgetting to suggest.

See this is creepy horror stuff, but it's also pathfinder which is slightly heroic

I, in this case, HIGHLY SUGGEST the Constantine tv series.

Ruby Quest and Nan Quest.
To quote the comments of the former, "(Explitive) just got triple-Lovecraftian!"
Both have nice fan-made soundtracks that would go well with the game.

In terms of games:
For PC or PS4 - Darkest Dungeon

Movies: Hellboy and The Last Witch Hunter

Wow, that is a lot of material to cover! I've started listening to the soundtracks posted by Mortagon, and I must say there's some good stuff in there (I especially like the dark and atmospheric Nox Arcana stuff). Thanks for all of the suggestions!

As for the games... my PC is not the best, so I'd be more likely to get a game for my Xbox 360, as it is the only console I own, although my DM has a PS4 so maybe we'll go to town on those games as we get the campaign started.

I do not have the horror book and I am sure they provide a list of HP's writings. I would really recommend one of his anthology books (ie many short stories) and just pick one for you players to read before an adventure. Sort of like home work and since most are fairly short it generally is not such a big deal.

I forgot to mention THIS SITE in my first post. It's a site that allows you to create custom music and sound effects for RPG's from the sites extended library. It is divided by category including one for horror (they even have one loop called asylum).

I'll be using the Suspiria soundtrack.

Oh, man. I have been preparing soundtrack themes for Strange Aeons for months already and I won't get to run it for many more months yet.

I've mostly gone with eerie soundscapes that really accentuate a feeling of dread and hopelessness for general play. I'll switch up to some more bombastic themes for combat.

Soundtracks and artists that I will be using heavily throughout include:

Soundtracks:
Alan Wake game - Petri Alanko
Alien franchise - various
And Then There Were None - Stuart Earl
Black Death - Christian Henson
The Boy - Bear McCreary
Bram Stoker's Dracula - Wojciech Kilar
The Conjuring 1 & 2 - Joseph Bishara
Dead Space games - Jason Graves & Jason Hannigan
The Descent - David Julyan
Halloween franchise - John Carpenter and various
Hannibal (TV show) - Brian Reitzell
Kohlhass - various
Macbeth - Jed Kurzel
Mercy - Reza Safinia
The Mist - Mark Isham
Nightmare on Elm Street franchise - various
The Omen - Jerry Goldsmith
Penny Dreadful - Abel Korzeniowski
Resident Evil game franchise - various
Sicario - Johann Johansson
Sinister - Christopher Young
There Will Be Blood - Jonny Greenwood
Under the Skin - Mica Levi
Until Dawn - Jason Graves
Valhalla Rising - various
The Whisperer in Darkness - Troy Sterling Nies
The Witch - Mark Korven

Artists:
Akira Yamaoka
Atrium Carceri
Bohren & Der Club of Gore
Chad Fifer
Eyvind Kang
Forest Swords
Jeff Greinke
The Haxan Cloak
Iron Cthulhu Apocalypse
Kronos Quartet
Krzysztof Penderecki
Lustmord
Musica Cthulhiana
Sephiroth
TenHornedBeast
Ulf Soderberg

Some more creepy music you may find interesting:

The Goatman soundtrack by the unseen listener
Tattered by Allicorn
Fungi from Yuggoth by Allicorn
At the mountains of madness by Allicorn
In remote places by Allicorn
Cthulhu by Cryo chamber
Nyarlathotep by Flint glass
Rito Necronomicon by Hierophania

Side note: A sound track that I always thought was unusual was the first Planet of the Apes from the 70's but I do not know how well that would interact with the other tracks people are suggesting above.

No links to Tabletop Audio yet?

There's even a soundboard option :)

Edit: D'oh! Someone did already, just not by name so I didn't see the link.

Great playlist. Followed.

I don't have too much to contribute to this, there's a pretty wide net of great material here. I'll try not to repeat any of it, as most of my suggestions have already been covered!!

This music isn't strictly Lovecraftian in its tone, but definitely stuff I'm planning to play. Definitely not ALL of a lot of each album/artists discography are going to be useful, but I very heavily curate my playlists at the table.

Mamiffer
30 Days of Night OST
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni OST
Amnesia OST
Disparition (of Welcome to Nightvale fame)
Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts album.

So many other recommendations are great! I haven't started running Strange Aeons yet, but the first piece of music I'll be playing is from Resident Evil and will be used as the theme for the Tatterman. Resident Evil is definitely a series with a lot of music to glean, but it's not as consistently usable as something like Amnesia or Akira Yamaoka's work is going to be.

I actually quite enjoy these fan-made tracks in the same vein as the Resident Evil save rooms. They are generally soothing, yet haunting.

I'm kinda the electronic supplement guy among all my gamers, and so I heavily recommend the subscription model of Syrinscape (https://syrinscape.com/download/). For $7 every 2 months, you get everything from them, and I'm getting more and more proficient at recompiling pieces and parts into custom moods. It's really, really great.

Might I add Netflix's Stranger Things as an obvious addition for this list?
