Pathfinder Dad - need some tips (longer than I thought, sorry)

Advice

Scarab Sages

Quick background - on Saturday the weather where I live in the UK was terrible, it was 'chucking it down' as we say i.e. lots of rain. My sons said 'can we do a dungeon bash/' as they have no idea that a little prep still needs to be done, remember these are of the 'put the game/cartridge in the device' and go generation

Eldest has an elf rogue and youngest went for a dwarf fighter.

I grabbed four tiles from a certain (terrible) boardgame based on 'the worlds best known FRPG' and 2 hours later we were done - they were happy, I was happy and we had not one, but two, 'Am I still unconscious?' moments due to me fudging a bit to prevent PC rogue death.

I'm going to run Master of the Fallen Fortress for them 'leveled up' for 2nd level PC's but after that, any clues guys? Bear in mind that eldest son understands that tabletop rpgs aren't your MMORPG or PC RPG and that youngest is very much enjoying playing his dwarf (stats are str 17, dex 15, con 17, int 12, wis 16, cha 13)who walked through a horde of skellies while the rogue tried to keep up with head counts!!

Youngest son could very easily get bored with 'social interaction' but I thought that at least he's getting an experience of dad's funny looking dice and is, therefore, a future potential gamer.

The only idea I had was to convert Keep on the Borderlands for PFRPG, if I can find it in the rubbish tip that is the loft/attic...If memory serves me right doesn't is start with an intro with the watch captain or king etc then off for corridors, caverns and dungeon bashing galore?

Has anyone already done a conversion of KoTB or can point me in the right direction?

I haven't done a KotB conversion but I have found a 3.5 version of it and several others include Tomb of Horrors conversions here

Something I'd suggest in this case: since the kids are still quite young, they probably haven't played any of the classic roleplaying games that you may have (like Baldur's Gate for example). You can perfectly re-hash the plots and levels from such games into a cohesive Pathfinder game. Use the Bestiaries to generate enemy monster stats and for special occasions stat up a class-leveled boss fight.

Since computer RPGs tend to be much more focused on the action you can get the games to be more bashy than a typical module - while still retaining a strong story and several plot points where some social interaction can be developed (if that is desired).

Oh, and as a quick-help: use the walk-throughs for such computer RPGs (like Baldur's Gate) to help you guide/prepare for sessions.

WOW!!! I'm impressed, thanx guys. I just found a conversion on ENWorld but I'll check the 'official' conversions' on wizards too.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

Don't sweat the details too much either. You are their father and undoubtedly the best GM they will ever have. The time you spend with them is what is important.

I commend you.

Can't help with that, but I can offer this:

1. Check out this site. Dyson Logos offers many great maps, some of which he's keyed for dungeon crawls. They're not PF, but conversion ought not be a problem. For example, check out his Gallows Cross.

2. If you have time to flesh out short plot synopses, shoot me an email at mark at spesmagna dot com. As one gaming dad to another, I'll shoot you back a free copy of 5 Adventures, 25 Rooms.

Anytime - i have a notebook on the go with loads of ideas. I'll playtest some on the guys then unleash them on my kids...or the other way around LOL

I'm just getting all the stuff off w*****s before they are removed for ever.

How old are your kids? If they are in the elementary age range perhaps what you need to keep on hand is not Pathfinder but something like Descent: Journeys in the Dark board game. Fantasy board games can be much quicker to setup and run "spur of the moment style" and are easier to drop in and out of.

Actually the campaign boxes for Descent can be used as Geomorphs to piece together your own short dungeon.

Old HeroQuest adventures work equally well if not better because they have minor plots as well.

In the interest of quick gaming prep, I think this and this are appropriate.

You can find rules for quick prep in OSRIC (free pdf) to make randomly generated dungeons and adventures.

Theres a conversion thread up on these forums.

The problem with running Descent with kids is that it's BRUTAL and I can see them getting disheartened rather quickly. However, the missions in Descent could make good dungeon crawl adventures that wouldn't take much conversion. Though it sounds like the OP has bunch of old Greatest RPG In the World stuff to make use of.

Most of my stuff is actually 3.5/FRCS as I got back into when the DM at the time was using 3e, I went and got the three core books and they were already up to 3.5 - back in the 80s I played LOADS of Basic D&D: KoTB, Castle Amber and Isle of Dread are the only mods i remember, but i think it was the '85-'89 summer breaks where all we did was role play at least 4 out of 7 days to allow the DM to prepare.

but hey after the fracas that was the 4e release I moved over to Pathfinder. I found this in my internet trawl this morning:

http://www.enworld.org/forum/conversions/245278-attempt-rebuild-conversion- library-please-upload-conversions-3-5-here.html

I've got the original and the conversion....all i have to do is Pathfinderize it!!
