A diamond's hardness

What is it?

The closest thing can find is something I think was written for 3.5 (The Underdark Adventure Guide) that included Crystalline Weapons.

Basically, they have 20 Hardness, but really low HP (hard, but brittle).

Quote:

Using precious stones to line the edge of bladed weapons, crystalline weapons are capable of slicing through the toughest of hides. A weapon edged in crystal ignores half of the armor bonus granted by armor (round up). Against magical armor, this applies only to the armor, but not the enhancement bonus of the armor. This also applies to shields. The weapon itself must be enchanted to at least the same level as the armor to enjoy this effect, otherwise it's treated as a normal weapon. Furthermore, if used to sunder a weapon or strike an inanimate object the weapon deals an additional +1d6 points of damage.

True crystalline weaponry is rare in the extreme. These weapons are made entirely from a precious crystal or gem and are fragile but very lethal weapons used only in the times of greatest need. A true crystalline blade is typically made of diamond. It ignores armor bonuses of armor, as well as deflection bonuses from magical items. Against magical armor, the weapon needs to have an enhancement bonus equal to or greater than that of the armor in order to have any special effect; otherwise, it is treated as a normal weapon.

These weapons are extremely fragile, despite their incredible hardness. A weapon that is true crystalline shatters on a natural attack roll of a 1; its hardness is 20 but it only has 5 hp. Only slashing and piercing weapons may be crystalline.

As far as I know, Paizo has no official statting of anything diamond, or even crystalline at all.

I remember seeing something describing adamantine as being "as hard as diamond", so I would guess 20. However, I can't find anything in printed Paizo PFRPG rules on it, so in regards to this being a "Rules Questions" forum post, there is likely no answer.

EDIT: also, you asked this same question over 3 years ago: Hardness and Hit Points of Diamond

lol. :D

When you've been a member of the forums as long as I have, you sometimes forget things like that. Thanks for pointing it out.

I can't imagine this doesn't come up fairly regularly. Kinda surprised we haven't seen an expanded materials hardness and HP table at some point between then and now.

Hrm. There's "hardness" in real life terms, and "hardness" in Pathfinder game terms. They're not really the same.

Diamonds in real life are one of the "hardest" minerals around; they're used for cutting glass and as tips for drills. If you tried to convert this to Pathfinder "hardness," you'd think that they would have a very high "Hardness" value, making them very difficult to damage with weapons.

In real life, though, a smack with a regular hammer will turn even the largest of diamonds into a pile of dust and scraps. While being very "hard" in real-world scientific terms, they're also very brittle. This might lead one to believe that they have little to no Pathfinder "Hardness" value.

(BTW, Hardness in minerals refers to the resistance of the material to being scratched by other materials. Doesn't really translate to Pathfinder "Hardness" rules.)

Diamonds have an "Adamantine" lustre =)
