Looking for character ideas

Advice

Greetings fellow gamers, I'm Gimbelt a future new pathfinder player.

To keep the story short: Very long ago I used to play and enjoy a lot D&D 3.5; Now I have an schedule good enought to play regularly again. And, luckily, the group I used to play with are going to start a new Pathfinder adventure... But, at the moment, I have no idea of what I want to play; neither concept or class hahaha.

If you don't mind share it with me, I'm looking for character concept ideas (and a few tips for his build to keep it good enought; they still optimice characters a bit like we used to do in the old days).

For sources, we only have (if I remember it correctly) the Core Rulebook, Advanced Character Guide, Inner Sea World Guide and Bestiary I. If it's just one or two things that are from other source, the GM will probably let me take it if it's not an entirely class.

Thank you for your time and help ^^

Liberty's Edge

What sort of character did you like to play in 3.5?

I am currently playing a hunter (Advanced Class Guide) with the feral archetype. Most people would recommend against the feral archetype because it gives up the animal companion, generally considered the strongest feature of the class, but I like the flexibility of the feral focus/wild shape combination.

I recommend adding the Advanced Player's Guide. It has a wealth of good classes, feat, spells etc.

I think you mean Advanced Player's Guide, right? That one is way earlier than the A.C.G.

Anyway, I think you'll enjoy the Magus, coming out of 3.5e. It plays a bit like the duskblade, but in addition to the touch spell delivery thing, it also gets to incorporate the ability to full attack while casting any spell, not just offensive touch. It does have the downside of partial base attack, and spells per day akin to a bard, but it's somewhat offset by the ability to enchant your weapon, broader spell-list, and the earlier access to new spell levels.

Paladins are good, and while druids where hit *hard* with a nerfbat to the genitals, they're no slouches either.

Archery is now the most consistently damaging way of fighting. Mainly because of the nerf that high-damage martials(i.e. überchargers) recieved, and Deadly Aim, pathfinder's power-attack equivalent for ranged attacks.

If you're the sort to go in for spellcasters, make sure to read over your workhorse spells again. A bunch of them were nerfed, such as Solid Fog and Glitterdust.

Still plenty to go round, though.

Beware of feat bloat. The designers took the additional 3 feats they added to the 20level progression as a cue to split a lot of feats up into bits, so be careful what kind of feat chains you get tangled up in. The style feats are particularly prone to this symptom.

First of all, I apologice; It's the "Advanded Playe's Guide" the one we own not the "Advanced Character Guide"... I think there is not even a book called like that hahaha.

I used to enjoy so much playing as a Barbarian and Ranger and in a bit less degree Duskblade, Cleric and Wizard. In the other hand, I've never completly enjoyed the "Spontaneous Spell Casters" with the exception of the Duskblade. I think my most played class was the Barbarian, from the mindless guy who likes to smash to an intelectual one with some rage problems.

Sadly I don't have acces to the "Advanced Class Guide" (again, sorry for my mistake with the names) so I can't play a hunter. I know there is some web sites where I could have acces to all content but I prefer to have a physical copy of the book at hand when I play just in case... and the GM too hahaha.

The hunters seem fun and great (I've just looked it online despite of not being able to play it in this adventure).

Thank you so much for your reply.

Okay.

Well, archery is legitimately the highest damage you can end up doing.

If you ever wanted to play a paladin in 3.5e, but were put off by the class, you could try doing that. They're really hard to mess up in pathfinder. You can pretty much just do the obvious things, or even pick wierd things you like (sword and board, anyone?) and come out okay.

Liberty's Edge

The APG has an interesting caster: the Witch class. If you liked playing wizards, you might have fun with a witch.

I've never played a Paladin (I think it's the only class I've never tried) but mostly for the code; I would probably ending as a Stupid-lawful PainInTheAss hahaha.

Proceding to read the witch. I've skipped it because of the name hahaha

Sword and Board, how much time I've invested on trying to do it good enought for my lovely Knight. Yes... I've played a few Knights in the past with no problems, at least not with their code but I can't play the Paladin's code; it's like when I used to play League of Legends... I truly hated Mastery Yi but I had a lot of fun with Tryndamere o.O

To "Sword and Board" kind of style of fighting, would the Cavalier fit in easily? If not, which classes would fit in "Sword (or other weapon) and board" style easily?

Mhmm... What level are you starting at? You *could* do cavalier, but it won't be as good as the paladin.

Still not *bad*, but paladins are just better.

We are starting at level 4. I've not asked it, but we used to finish somewhere around level 14 - 16.

I think I will let the "Sword and Board" keep resting with the paladin class and look for another option hahaha. Thanks anyway, it's worth knowing that this skind of fighting has improved, like archery.

I've just read de Witch, maybe because I'm a bit "cold" on character concept generation I can only see the character being a ugly, green "thing"(anybody know if it's male or female; probably not even the character)... Any cool concept idea? I'm really "stuck at thinking" them right now o.O (I know there is an expression to describe ir right, but it just doesn't come out, like the character concept).

Thanks for all of your responses ^^

Sword and shield actually hasn't improved that much (although shield master is a nice new feat), it's just that when you get a more or less constant flat +lvl to damage, you can get away with a lot of stuff.

Anyway, do you know roughly what you want to do? Casting or martial stuff? Skills?

The ninja is a pretty good skill monkey.

I want to play everything at the same time hahaha.

Having spells would be nice, but if it's for a barbarian or some kind of cool style unable to shine in 3.5 I would be very happy too hahaha.

I've been watching a bit the Alchemist. Maybe it's a very standard concept but, I can see me playing like a mad scientist; whose laught it's creepy. The kind of guy who anyone can't fully undertand (maybe mixing a bit of a very smart guy and a very little comons sense? not sure). I have almost one day to generate a full and cool concept but when I've started to read I've felt like the first time I've read the 3.5 Barbarian.

Despite of having time to think about the concept, anyone with a cool idea around? I'm not stick to the first thought.

And, for builds, a few tips to start with? If I get a little inspiration, this will be the hard part; I use to like to have a few levels planed ahead (making a character moment by moment it's not my strenght and they use to be... mechanically bad; even the barbarians hahaha.

Again, thanks for all of your responses (and patience with such dubitative guy I'm).

How about a Bard with the Archetype Arcane Duelist
Take Toughness at first level. Make sure to take Lingering Performance.

The bard will get Medium armor at 10th level and heavy armor at 16th.
I like spontaneous casters personally. Mirror image becomes one of your favorite spells.

You can easily become a sword and board Bard, kind of like a Duskblade.

---

If you really like the Dusk Blade, there is also the Eldrich Knight Prestige Class.

My problem with spontaneous casters it's that I always manage to feel that I don't have selected the right spells almost all the time... And thats so annoying for me.

Eldrich Knight may be interesting, taking 1 fighter level and some ¿wizard? levels until meeting all requisites and go with a 18 - 20 crit weapon making it end at 15 - 20 with the feat or keen.

¿There is some full arcane caster with better BAB? I have not seen it and I'm almost sure that it don't exist but I can just skipped it.

Thank you all for your responses :)

Magus has prepared casting, if you're more into that sort of thing. It's quite a bit better than the EK, at least until level 14 or so.

Dark Archive

I like the Barbarian. I seem to just keep playing more of them, (I have about five floating around at the moment), but they aren't always everyone's cup of tea. Still; human barbarian with greatsword, STR 20, Power Attack and Reckless Rage knocks out 2d6+16 at level 1. I played a PFS session in tier 4-5 with one of these guys at level 1 and he still did the highest damage in the party.

I don't have the book where the magus is in, so I can't use it. The list of books I want is beig extended more amd more hahaha.

I know that If I play a Barbarian I will not get bored, never hahaha I love them. For what I've read, Barbarian have a few extra choices compared to 3.5 Barbarians and, even losgin a bit of damage from de changue of Power attack, it is more "cost" efective giving -1/+3 instead of -1/+2 with two handed weapons hahaha. I've used a lot of barbarians in 3.5, trying to make them all different from each other even if they share like 50% of the build hahaha.

I liked the alchemist when I've read it more closely and I will try to play one. Thank you all for your responses, help and ideas.

I've just seen two "Grenadier" archetipes:
-> Grenadier "1"

-> Grenadier "2"

If I've not missed anything they are identic... Some one can tell me why there are two from diferent sources? Thank you all ^^
