Ring Gates and Siege Engines

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So, just thinking of odd ways to mess with mechanics, but can anyone think of a good reason not to weld a Ring gate to the mouth of a cannon, or sovereign glue one to the business end of a Ballista? Have the other fixed to a shield and you have a mobile siege weapon... Probably only good for one range increment, but still a sight to behold.

Silver Crusade

Not for much, you only get between 5-10 shots a day, as the heavy bolts weigh 20 pounds, light ones 10. With a cannon, the best you can get is 4 shots a day, with 2 as the minimum due to the weight of the bombards or cannonballs.

Still, get one and sneak a infiltrator to the inside of a castle and get off four cannonballs from inside the walls. COuld be funny is nothing else.

I just had the visual of going into peace talks with the leader sieging our castle, and saying we offer this gift *hand him box, he opens it, balista hits him in the face. *

In one campaign my party had an airship, i wanted to get some ring gates and attach the 'in' one to a wall in the hold and aim ballistae at it, then attach the 'out' one to the front of someone's shield.

They're range is up to a mile, seems like a pretty good way to keep supplies up for an adventuring party too (if you have a flying base sorta thing going on like we did).

Another idea i had was for the dwarf to wear both the gates as a belt sort of thing, then he'd just kind of toss his legs at people... he was a very strange dwarf.

Actually sounds like a fun idea!

For the rest of the day, you get spellcasters to cast through it. Most spells don't have any mass. An argument could be made that some of the conjuration spells that don't have SR are actual physical objects, but magic missile isn't.

It's a great way to take advantage of all of the low level followers for leadership. A first level caster may only get one magic missile, but it's extra damage against everybody who doesn't have SR or shield up. For that matter you can have them use wands and get more damage output.

These people can also do cures, buffs, summons and utility spells from a safe location. I would suggest that they keep a metal plate over the gate on their side when it's not being used.
