Create Undead-Is it viable?

Advice

So I was looking at the create undead spell, and was wondering if it was in some way viable. I've had a curiosity with regards to necromancers, though I've never gotten around to playing one (To many Pharasmin party members) so I've seen guides like Brewers and Shaka's before. The general consensus seems to be that create undead is powerful, but to volatile to be considered viable. I was curious if there was a way to change that. I considered the command undead feat as an option, but a will save every day for any type of intelligent undead seems like a bit to much of a risk to me. So, I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas with regards to how to control intelligent undead without the constant danger of breaking free. If this is sadly the most viable option, I was wondering if anyone knew any good ways to effectively incapacitate these undead for long enough to get them back under control. I know there are quick fixes like web spells and the like, but I was wondering if there was a somewhat more reliable option then a spell, like an item that's good for containing them as soon as they break free, a contingency of sorts. Thanks in advance for any advice on the matter.

Using it on people loyal to you already as a reward for their service is one good way.

JuJu Zombies are a personal favorite of mine.

"How would you like to retain your personality, appearance, free will, all your abilities, and basically everything else, but become immortal and immune to electricity and those pesky magic missiles?"

This is a good idea actually. My problem with it is that they aren't really the necromancers undead then. They just become some undead who follows you around. It can refuse your orders if it wants to and just leave whenever it feels like it. I'd want to be able to use the undead at my own impunity, with it under my control. An undead friend could just turn against you whenever it feels like it. I mean, it may obey your orders if it suits it, but if I wanted it to enter a situation where it may be killed it could just say screw that and leave.

Bump.

Yep. That's the issue.

You still have Command Undead for whenever someone turns on you. They're better than a Cohort from Leadership in that regard.

Command them and then kill them while they stand slack-jawed and impotent, as an example to anyone else who gets a bright idea.

Hm, good point. Thanks Sundakan.

This is the general problem with being an evil overlord, whether your servants are undead or not. It is pretty much a given that anyone that will work with you will be a bad guy, out only for their own self interest and prone to betray you.

All you have is coercion or payoffs, and eventually those always fall apart.

No problem. I thought about this a lot when I played my JuJu Oracle, but he was hit by a Destruction in the fight before we leveled enough to be able to cast Create Undead. ='(

I think you really just need to restrain them while not using them, so when they break free of your control, it doesn't really matter. Then, when you want to go somewhere with your undead army, you grab however many you can command from whatever holding pen you're using and bring them with you, and put them away when you're done.

If I ever get an evil cleric or wizard high enough level to create greater undead, I'm just going to get a portable hole and fill it with shadows. I can pop it open and command them before I go somewhere, then pull them out when I need them.

Use "Bestow curse" on the commanded undead.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/b/bestow-curse

Bestow curse says "You may also invent your own curse, but it should be no more powerful than those described above." and choose "-4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, ability checks, and skill checks." but make the curse only work against you. Now it's harder for the undead to break free from your control and will be a lesser threat for you.

You're doing it wrong. Nothing about being an evil overlord says you have to be a dick about it.

Evil overlords can be good bosses just like anyone else. Human(oid) capitol management is every bit as important to the evil hordes as it is to the good guys.

If you're an Undead Sorcerer (or something similar that can affect Undead with Enchantment effects), Geas is a good option on top of that.

Finally someone else who gets it!

"So, friend, do you have some time next weekend, do discuss some "projects" i have been juggling in my mind ...? The Golden Bell over at the docks has some nice privat rooms who are protected by a Private Sanctum, and the extracharge is really miniscule."

The one big problem with Create Undead is creating intelligent undead. Because, unless you regularly exert your control over them, they might turn and kill you. Reserve Raise Undead for your enemies, and Create Undead for your trustworthy allies.
