By not the best team player, do you mean jerk? If that is the case, not being in the same group as that person is the only help. Any other "fix" is temporary, as jerk players will just end up making a long string of jerk characters.
A person that can't play as a team will only change if they wish to. Nothing can force someone else to change.
Game mechanics can only go so far. No amount of alarm spells, wards, perception feats, or divination will stop a jerk from ultimately becoming a jerk.
Seriously. An adventuring party should always consist of people you would trust your life with. Not any murderhobo that keeps making jokes about splitting the fallen's gear at every opportunity, or worse.

Get everyone to agree the game does not allow PvP. Then if he tries some PvP, tell him no, and ignore any effect he tries against you. Also complain to the group that they agreed no PvP.
If he persists, boot him from the game for breaking a social contract he agreed to.
If you cannot get a non-PvP agreement, then leave. That table does not play the way you want.

Nothing in game or in character can solve this.
Talk to your party, the whole party including the GM, this "problem" player and everyone else, and explain that:
1) You are not interested in competing with the other players at the table
2) As such, you do not want to participate in a game that involves PVP
3) Would like everyone to agree that PVP is not an option in this game
4) Tell them that if this is unacceptable you would rather leave the game than continue playing
This is the only effective means of getting what you want, which is a hassle free and fun gaming experience that does not require scheming against fellow players.
If this player breaks the no PVP agreement then he does so with everyone having consented and agreed to it then that would (in my mind) constitute easy grounds to have that player removed from the group.
