Tiny and smaller entering a Square, new FAQ and Question.

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

So the new FAQ came out regarding Tiny creatures entering occupied squares:

Tiny and smaller creatures: In the section on Tiny and smaller creatures, it says that entering a creature’s space provokes an attack of opportunity, but typically 5-foot steps don’t provoke an attack of opportunity. If a Tiny or smaller creature took a 5-foot step into a creature’s space, would it provoke an attack of opportunity?

Yes. Even with a 5-foot step, a Tiny or smaller creature entering a creature’s space provokes an attack of opportunity (unless it is using a more specific ability to avoid the attack of opportunity such as the Monkey Shine feat). This doesn’t mean that a Tiny or smaller creature entering a creature’s space and moving out of a threatened square with a move action provokes two attacks of opportunity from that creature, for the same reason that moving out of multiple of a creature’s threatened squares in the same move action doesn’t provoke two attacks of opportunity.

Can you use acrobatics to avoid this AoO?

yes, it moving through an enemy square.

It is moving into an enemy's square, not sure if the same rules apply, since we have already seen 5' step here provokes.

The RAW is unclear on this.

Acrobatics (due to very bad wording) says you can use it to MOVE THROUGH a threatened square without provoking. This is badly worded because MOVING THROUGH threatened squares was never what provoked in the first place; it's LEAVING A THREATENED SQUARE that provokes.

Bad Paizo for this bad wording.

That leaves us to wonder. Did Acrobatics really mean to say it can be used to LEAVE a threatened square without provoking? I have always assumed that is what it meant to say. But if that is the case, then it is no more helpful to tiny creatures ENTERING an occupied space than taking a 5'Step is - they could not use Acrobatics to avoid the AoO for ENTERING an occupied space.

But if Acrobatics really meant to say that it can be used to MOVE INTO AND OUT OF (a fairly good definition of "through") a threatened square without provoking, then maybe we could try to argue that it's applicable to tiny creatures ENTERING an occupied square since you have to do that to MOVE THROUGH it in the first place.

So it's all a matter of guessing what Acrobatics is meant to say.

What if said tiny or smaller creature had Spring Attack?
Does moving into the square still trigger an AoO? Or does Spring Attack's language prevent you from triggering?

What if you are medium sized? Does Spring Attack allow you to go through an enemies square, without a acrobatics, so long as you attack at some point during the move?

We need another FAQ now.

since we know the what but not the why, yeah looks like it. It seems to be part of movement since you can't provoke for leaving a square and entering a square. But it also seems not since you do provoke with 5ft step.

I'm now two FAQ wrong. This one and the free actions while taking an AoO.

I think I can explain this one.

5 ft step prevents all AoO from leaving a threatened square.

Entering someone else's space provokes from the "entering". It has nothing to do with leaving.

So a tiny doing a 5 ft step doesn't provoke from leaving, but still does from the entering.

Most GM's would be content accepting an Acrobatics to avoid the "entering" AoO when using the "move through" ability. Mostly because entering is only half the task of moving through. Ask your GM.

I don't think answering the "How is entering different than move through for Acrobatics DC+5 action?" is a good use of a FAQ slot.
