Question about chest barriers

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hey all,

Just a quick question, and it is probably a stupid one, so I do apologise, I am a VERY new player and am probably being daft.

We came across a chest barrier requiring, among other stats, strength/melee check of 6 (I think).

My question is, can a character like harsk, who has strength, but no melee sub stat, still attempt to open it with just a strength check or does he require the melee to even attempt it?

Thank you all!

Sovereign Court

If it lists multiple skills, you have your choice of what to use. For your example, you could use either Strength or Melee to try and get a 6. Also, if a skill is not written on your character card, you are always allowed to use it with a d4 as the die. In this case, Strength is better than a d4 for the vast majority of characters, so you probably want to use Strength instead of Melee.

Brilliant, thank you Andrew!

I don't know why, but it's been very hard for a couple people not to get that the list of skills are all independent entries. Someone playing the Swashbuckler in Shackles came across some barrier with Strength - Melee (and a couple others I can't recall) and assumed he couldn't try it because he did melee off of his Dex, as he was reading it like Strength(Melee) or something.

Another common mistake is to use a weapon when a melee or ranged check is asked for (like if facing a tavern brawl type barrier).
Unless specifically written, weapons are only for combat checks.

To be fair they probably couldn't do it anyways. The Swashbuckler (Jirelle) only has Melee if the check has or is against a card that has the Finesse trait. Generally that makes to rather hard to roll Melee against a barrier.

This is true. I'm probably misremembering something then. Either way, I think the general gist of the statement goes through.

Not if it's Barrroom Brawl! If memory serves, that does have the Finesse trait.

Or maybe I'm just confused because you're allowed to use Dexterity on your check to defeat that one?

I don't think any bane has the Finesse trait. Barroom Brawl allows Dexterity as a way to defeat it though.
