So over time, I've grown weary of the character I've been playing. I'm a merciful healer, have been for over a year, and I'm desperate for some sort of change, and with my character's reason for being there coming to a close, it seemed a good time to retire him. So I built a badass monk cleric that rocks a temple sword so hard the enemy's head will spin.
Then my GM throws me a curve ball-instead of saving our losing his wife, her mind is trapped in his mind. They've melded. Which is awesome. This has left me in a tricky position though. I still want to play the badass, but my original character can now take a level of spiritualist, which is cool cause I've been loving Occult Adventures, and it wasn't allowed previously. And I like the character himself.
Basically, I'm torn between the badassNess of a well built character vs the intrique of something I haven't done yet. Help?

do you have to make the decision now? Play your current character with the twin soul, and see if you like it. The roleplaying aspect of two souls, one male and one female being trapped in one body would be awesome. And it would give you the chance to evolve from what you have been. Perhaps wifey is the stronger personality and takes over, driving your growth as a spiritualist.
And if it still doesn't work, you could retire. I'd chat with your GM, let him know your thoughts, but since I've already seen this scenario, he is probably reading this right now :)

Spiritualists, even more than most pet classes, don't multiclass well. No other class (certainly not monk or cleric) advances the phantom & it will rapidly become useless in game if it isn't already - you haven't said what level you are now.
Depending on your game a level which does nothing for you mechanically may be acceptable. YMMV.
If it's possible to rebuild your character as a spiritualist, and keep the personality that might work better?

Rebuilding him as a spiritualist would give me a pair of powerful characters from go, which would be a little rough, considering there's 5 of us, possibly soon to be 6-too many PCs cam slow stuff down a lot. And losing cleric isn't something I necessarily want to do, as he's incredibly religious.
I'd likely only take 1 level for the flavor and I'm about to become level 10. Though it does do something mechanically for new-virtually immune to mind effecting effects and pushing my diplomacy to a +22 due to choosing the devotion emotional focus lol

I have been in a similar situation (where I was bored with my existing character and found a way to retire him - not having been a two-fer human), and I opted to switch to the new character with a build I was excited about. It was a disappointing experience.
My new build was fun, but (comparatively) my new character was pretty far removed from the story and from the other PCs. All the quirks and mannerisms that had been built up in the group were appropriate for the former PC but weren't for the new PC because he'd been freshly introduced. I learned my lesson well.
Now, when I get bored with a PC's build, I work with my DM to find a way to rebuild or retrain to a build I'm more satisfied with while keeping the character and staying closely tied to the story. If you can see this as an option, it's definitely the best one.

Well that's what he and I had just started talking about it when the imbued soul thing happened, and while I loved it, it does put a kink in that, as having another soul combined with mine won't bring about the kind of changes I was planning on, thus why I looked at spiritualist.
But yeah, he has a southern drawl and tends to try to give villains a second chance (giving us some interesting guards back at our manor) but is fairly ineffective as we grow in level.

Starting to look like I'll stick with my current character, then maybe switch later, as a) that's always an option and b) there may be something further in the dungeon that would let me have the best of both worlds, my character getting a rebuild should be live till that point. Should be interesting
