Using the mount spell underground

If, for example, a drow in Sekamina casts "Mount" what animal would appear? The spell specifies a horse or pony, but as neither has darkvision that seems wrong underground, however, it seems equally wrong that the spell is useless underground. Any thoughts? Is there an "undeground" version of the spell?

The spell works as normal. There is no underground version of it. I think it would be a reasonable houserule to make an alternate spell that gives a mount with darkvision while something else is less powerful (like a lower movespeed).

Nope. Horses and Ponies only. Of course you can research a variant, but the spell only does as written.

Just use Alter Summoned Monster and change it to a Fire Beetle. Get darkvision and flight.

Just noticed: regular fire beetle has low-light vision, but the sample summoned one has darkvision.

As to riding, I recall it was a standard mount for some underground race in 2E or 3E DND.

It probably should have low-light vision on both sheets. Darkvision would be applied via the fiendish and celestial templates.

I just don't know how a medium Drow is going to ride a small beetle. How would you do it, stand on it like a segway?
