Craft Wondrous Item feat and PC starting out at 7th level

Advice

I have a PC starting at 7th level - and he wants to know if he can take the Craft Wondrous Item feat so that he has to pay the crafting price instead of the full price. Just wondering if other DMs have run into this before, and how it was handled.

That's up to you. He's not the first player to try to get a magic item break on price by taking casting feats.

I would remind the player that WBL does not represent your character coming into the world naked with a pile of cash next to him, it represents the history of the character from it's humble beginnings.

I'd give him a bit of a break, but not halfies on every wondrous item he happens to have.

I remember a FAQ or a Dev comment saying that if a character has taken a crafting feat during creation they pay the crafting price instead of purchase.

Make sure he can actually craft his items, otherwise he may end up with a cursed item. Just taking the feat doesn't mean he can always craft them.

Also as I recall there's a recommendation to actually increase the WBL of characters taking crafting feats since a crafting feat doesn't inherently increase their combat abilities. Can't recall where though.

Ultimate Campaign has guidelines for this. I believe it boils down to an increase of 25% WBL just for that character to represent prior crafting. Two or more crafting feats bumps it to a 50% bonus.

Thank you for this reference. It's a good way to balance it.

I would suggest a 25% increase on his WBL as well.
