If you encounter a card like Ambush, and you have a card that adds dice to defeat a barrier, it wouldn't work, right?
What about if you are closing a location and you have to defeat a monster to close it. Would a card that gives bonuses to closing a location work?

Don't remember ambush text but ..

If it's a check against that barrier it should work. Abadar really useful for those.

If it's a monster summoned by that barrier it shouldn't. Use baphomet or shax.

Ambush has a check to defeat, right? If so, bonuses to defeat a barrier will affect that, but not any monsters encountered due to Ambush. That is defeating a monster, not a barrier.

Also, if a location close summons a monster, that also is a check to defeat a monster, not to close a location. Defeating the monster is what closes the location, not succeeding the check.

Ambush has a check to defeat Dexterity/Acrobatics/Wisdom/Perception of 9 with the Veteran trait. So any card that helps defeat a barrier or one of those skills, would work.

If a location has a When Closing that requires you to summon and defeat a Henchmen (monster), a blessing like Gozreh (2 dice on a check to close a location) would not work. But if the check was a Survival/Wisdom 11, Gozreh would work.

See this FAQ specifically about Gozreh and closing locations that are simply checks.

Ambush was the wrong example. Forgot it has something against it. Something more like Arboreal Blight or Demonic Horde is what I meant

The blessings care about what the thing you're actually performing the check against is. If you're rolling the Check to Defeat on a Barrier, Abadar adds 2 dice. If you're rolling the Check to Defeat on a Monster (even if it was summoned by a Barrier), Abadar only adds 1 die.

Both Arboreal Blight and Demonic Horde do not have any Checks to Defeat (in that the box says "None"), so Abadar won't work against either of them.

Same with a When Closing text summoning a Monster. Look only at the scope of the current check and not anything that may have caused the check to happen.

Related Question ...

On the Reduction Field barrier (I think that's the name), it has a regular check to defeat (Con/Fort/Dex/Disable?), then in the text it says anybody there at the end of their turn can make an Arcane or Divine check to banish it.

Would that end-of-turn check qualify for a Blessing of Abadar or Find Traps?

It would not. Your aren't defeating it anymore at that point, just banishing it.

That's what I thought, but I got outvoted.
