I'm joining an already-in-progress campaign tomorrow, and I'm trying to figure out what exactly to play.
The campaign apparently has a murder mystery theme to it, and will be heavy on role play and light on combat. I'm primarily expecting skill and social encounters.
Here's what I know about the existing party:
- Bard/Rogue
- Bard/Barbarian
- Investigator
- Sorcerer
- Spellslinger
- Strength Rogue
- Holy Gun
- Brawler
For character creation:
- All Paizo material is allowed
- Third party material is possible with DM approval
- I'll be starting at 3rd level
- Standard two traits
- Ability scores use this array: 18, 16, 14, 12, 12, 10
With a party that large, I'm pretty sure there's going to be some amount of overlap no matter what I do. Any suggestions?
I was thinking about a Psychic Detective Investigator; that sounds like it might feel different enough compared to the normal Investigator.
Are there any archetypes or anything that would end up being close to a Magus/Investigator or Bard/Investigator hybrid? That seems like it could be fun.

Hmm. That's an idea. I hadn't really thought about it because I'd been thinking the next Inquisitor I play would be a Sacred Huntsmaster, which seems like it'd be better for a more combat-heavy campaign.
Stern Gaze, Track, Detect Alignment, and Discern Lies all seem really good for a mystery campaign. If I took the Heresy Inquisition, using Wisdom instead of Charisma for Bluff and Intimidate sounds good, and at 4 I could roll twice and take highest for Bluff, Diplomacy, and Stealth.
I do end up with less skill points that a Bard or Investigator, though... And the rest of the class is pretty heavily combat focused. Man, if there were an archetype to trade away the teamwork feat stuff for Inspiration, that'd be amazing though.

Don't forget about monster lore! It's a nifty bonus that just might play into the campaign. Make your dude a paranormal investigator and part-time exorcist like Constantine or the brothers from Supernatural. Or be a representative of the church who investigates murders. Depending on how the holy gun in the party has set up his/her character, you two could be partners. You would also be the best divine caster in your group, which should not be overlooked.
With such a large group, I wouldn't worry about having less total skill points than some of the others. You're still getting base 6/level (pretty dang good!). Even if you find yourself with less ranks in a skill than one of your teammates (which will be likely, with such a diverse group), just use the aid another action! Just because you're not the best at something does not mean the one who is can't benefit from your super-awesome helpfulness! With 6(+) ranks per level and a wide range of skills to choose from, this will probably happen often.

Late to the party but.
I vote occultist.
THey have tons of skills.
and GREAT abilties to gather info. Talk to some dead people, "view the past" of areas. See the history of a knife, call up deamons to ask them for info.
They can rock out a fight or be amazing researchers All depending on how you allocate your resources for the day. Meaning you can switch out as needed. focus on divination one day get tons of vision percs and research abilities. find out all the stuff. still retains decent combat ability.
then when the day comes to go fight and try to knock some heads. Strap up with attack focused points that day. still retains decent info gatherin ability
Plus. A lot of your bonuses can be shared with others. That investigator going to try and figure osmething out? hand off your divination bonuses so they can search even better.
You want some extra combat ability. dip inspiried swashbuckler. or dip that white witch? archetype.. the one that gives you 5ft of hair with to hit of int and damage of Int. but really I think inspired is better.
Straight up str occultist isn't bad at all.
Could be an occultist with a crossbow or gun too quite easily and effectively.
