A character who chooses alchemist as his secondary class gains the following secondary class features.

Alchemy: At 3rd level, he adds his character level as a competence bonus on all Craft (alchemy) checks and can use Craft (alchemy) to identify potions.

Bombs: At 7th level, he gains the ability to create a number of bombs per day equal to his Intelligence modifier + 1/2 his character level. The bombs deal damage as an alchemist of his character level, but since he doesn't have the alchemist's throw anything class feature, he doesn't add his Intelligence modifier to the damage.

Mutagen: At 11th level, he gains the mutagen class feature, with a duration equal to 10 minutes per character level. He counts as an alchemist for the purposes of drinking a mutagen.

Swift Poisoning: At 15th level, he gains the poison use and swift poisoning abilities.

Poison Immunity: At 19th level, he becomes immune to poison.

Combined with Thuvian Alchemist

enable you to take Discoveries as an Alchemist of your Character Level? You are an Alchemist and have an Alchemist level and are receiving Discoveries. You just received your Discovery Class Feature from an alternate source [one which actually stacks with Alchemist levels and debatably could allow you could take Discoveries above your character level, but that's a bit abusive and not my intention here.]

You don't get discoveries from the VMC

I am aware of that. You get discoveries from Thuvian Alchemist.

VMC provides an 'Alchemist Level.'

It doesn't meet the pre-reqs for qualifying for the PrC.

Does it? I don't see that mentioned either. He has an effective alchemist level for bombs and mutagens, but there is no mention of such a level for the purpose of alchemist discoveries. For an example of a VMC class that does have an effective level for discoveries, see the VMC wizard.

Arcane Discoveries are available to any wizard with a feat, the only discoveries available to Alchemists via a feat require a class giving Discoveries.

Thuvian Alchemist gives discoveries, discoveries have Alchemist Level prerequisites. VMC Alchemist has an Alchemist Level.

VMC Alchemist does not grant you an Alchemist level. You only get the benefits listed.

I should have known better than to hope to actually get something useful out of a VMC.

Oh really? Not many classes can make extracts.

They can be very beneficial, but only with a few specific builds. Most of the time they aren't worth the cost.

You've got me curious here Gisher. You know any specific builds that genuinely benefit from VMC Alchemist over 5 other feats available to the build?

Not VMC Alchemist (although it might turn out to be nice for a Warlock Vigilante depending on what the final design looks like). I was thinking more about combos like Battle Host Occultist with VMC Magus. There is seriously good synergy going on there.

A UnRogue/Rogue Underground Chemist/Scout is a pretty fun build. Grab the Bomber and Bombers Discovery: Explosive Bomb.

At level 8 walk into a room, toss an Explosive Bomb.

4D6+4D6+Int to the original target. 4+4D6+Int to anything within 10ft of original target. Throw in Slow Reactions and Debilitating Injury: Hampered and you've set yourself and your team up pretty damn well for next round.
