1 person marked this as a favorite.

So i was going through the Occult Adventures book and came across the Tome Eater archetype (the name is literal for those who might not have the book yet), i need to make a new character for a Reign of Winter game i play in and so i had the thought to make a Tome Eater Occultist who was a Goblin, goblins dont have a penalty to Int so it should be ok, for the character's personality i was kind of hoping to make something of a cross between a normal goblin, and Mordin Solus from mass effect. Basically make him brilliant (especially by goblin standards) but a slight bit crazy, and also have him speak very quickly. The main issue is that while i have a bit of an idea how to go about this i am also still a bit in the dark as to how i should prepare/get in character. Any ideas for him would be appreciated as well. ^_^

Seeing the title, my first thought was of the smart gremlin in Gremlins 2. Erudite, strategic, but still willing to shoot someone to prove a point.

For example, after he shot someone for no reason, he says "Now, was that civilized? No, clearly not. Fun, but in no sense civilized."

And he'll need glasses, of course.

My smart goblin acts like he's the most boring goblin in the world and genuinely envies the more raucous of his kind.

"Oh look, there's murgo. Oh man he's bashing that puppy's head with a rock. Man I wish I could be that cool."

Oh yes i like that

The idea i was thinking of was to have him sorta ramble a bit but talk extremely fast.

Reign of Winter Spoilers:
"Who are you? Not local, furs wrong, too heavily armed to be merchants, no guard uniform, magical aura... wait. Not magic, black aura, like mantle, mantle of black... you met Dark Midnight? You hold his mantle, his mantle would not pass to the queen's servants, unaffiliated or enemies only, you stand in her city, enemies? Quickly come, come inside."

That would be said very fast and in a goblin voice, the only problem is that other than him being slightly crazy from the occult stuff and incredibly smart for a goblin (int 20+) i dont know how to act, i figure he would probably be a bit different from most goblins but i am unsure in what ways i could do it

A friend of mine is playing an intelligent Goblin rogue. He read through the Goblins of Golarion book to find a decent rationalization for a Goblin PC that could reasonably make a living as a scoundrel. I think the book says something to the effect that Goblins seem cowardly in fights because it's the first time they realize they can die. Like, they know other things die, and that other goblins die, but they never contemplate their own mortality. So when they finally face a near death experience at the hands of some adventurer, it's the first time their brain says "oh, I could die here" and they flee in terror.

So our goblin buddy faced that "I'm about to die" situation and parlayed that into a chance to teach himself survival skills. Which turned into a Goblin Rogue.

So I guess the moral of my rambling story is to check out the Goblins of Golarion book, it's got all the info you need.

I made up a Goblin Grenadier Firebomber Alchemist: Koas Embers Boom Boom. He was made Chief (of Sanitation) by the city. He enjoys graft & corruption, like most sanitation officials. ("Want your block cleared of garbage? You gotta pay up!") And they indulge him because he and his crew burn up the trash, and help keep the rat population down. (Win win!)

I play him as Wallace Shawn (aka Vizzini from The Princess Bride).

I mean, Vizzini is perfect for either a Gnome or a Goblin character, right?

(Wally Shawn was also the Ferengi Magus on ST: DS9.)
