[Interest Check] Old School Revival: S&WE, ACKS, DCC, or AD&D

Recruitment

My last interest check did not generate anywhere near what I hoped it would generate (1 person in 36 hours). I don't know if it was because it was an older AP (Age of Worms) or if it was the system choices. So I am breaking it into piece mail.

I have become slightly obsessed with the new retroclones (or even the old originals) over the past year. The urge to run something using one of them begun to build.

Originally I set my sights on Age of Worms (the amount of throwbacks in this AP has always astonished me) but without the previous interest I've decided that could certainly be tossed.

Now I am just looking for the interest in playing one of the retroclones (or AD&D). And if the interest is there which one has the biggest following. Each of them has pros and cons...

Sword and Wizardry Complete has a more extension list of Monsters available to it.

Adventure, Conqueror, King has a rather interesting choice of classes between the main book and companion which I liked.

AD&D 2E is a system I have a familiarity with (atleast formerly) and is a complete game with all the splat books.

Dungeon Crawl Classics has the old school feel, but is a bit more modernized however it has some odd mechanics (Luck... Funky Dice).

Scarab Sages

Actually there was a busted recruitment just recently for age of worms via pathfinder that had lots of interest then the gm disapeared

link to that thread

Well, I would like to have old good ACKS adventure and the class options seems nice.

As to re-adjusting it to Age of Worms sounds nice.

I wish you luck with this recruitment. I have tried to recruit for a Labyrinth Lord game (OSR clone for Basic D&D c. 1981) and a heavily modified 5E game (to play more like 1E) and had almost no response. It seems most gamers on this forum like their "crunch".

Well, I am always up for some old fashioned games and willing to try these outs. These days its not so hard to get a book for cheap price and read the rules through as I do have at the moment a really flexible schedule

Hmm... I am totally down for doing one of the newer APs using one of the OSR systems. That may draw more interest. Iron Gods (Tales of the Comet, anyone?) OSR or Wrath of the Righteous OSR? Those really intrigue me!

I grew up on AD&D! If you want I could dust off some of my books and get cracking. I just need a refresher.

Glad to see some interest... between both threads I may be able to meek out a party. I'll continue to see if I can get alittle more interest before just trying to jump into something.

if you are doing a AD&D 2E then count me in :)

2E? Yes, Yes, Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ I have been waiting for one of these. I was in a failed 2e game about a year ago. Dusting off the books was fantastic and gave me lots of nostalgia (I'm actually younger than AD&D but my first game was a 2e game)

@Haru: The House of blades PbP game? (i was in it also)

I got alot of S&WE support in the other thread about Age of Worms. That being said... I would still love to run an AD&D game... maybe something modern instead of old school. Like Iron Gods 2E... Man.

Count me in for AD&D -- this gnome tried to go through the village of hommlett when the game fell apart. I am sure you could message some of the crew and see if they were around after following this alias a bit.

For your information I ran the following old school modules adapted to Pathfinder:
I ran N1 adapted to Pathfinder and the group finished the module and killed the BBEG.
I am currently running a group through B2 Keep on the Borderlands that happens to be adjacent to Rahasia (B7). The group is near the end of B7 at level 3. The party often grumbles that the challenges are hard (having met Gary and Tracy -- that it is how they intended them to be).
I also ran the fabled Forgotten City, but the party insisted on resting while being scryed by a magic - user, and found that ended badly (TPK).
I ran the Karameikos open ended campaign with the B modules chained together like an AP and the posting dried up and the game died due to lack of interest.

My wisdom is that you want to be clear we are going after a retro feel. All hopes for Wealth by Level, no death traps, and the idea that every encounter can be defeated because they all must be CR appropriate and we don't have to run should be checked at the door. My personal favorite: I can take damage because it is just charges off one of our many CLWs (almost forgot about that one). Just my 2cp.

Just saying I'm still here and interested in an AD&D game!

Healing is very hard in 2E (cleric don't have that many spell slot, can't sub spell for Cure spell. and the Cure spell do not scale with level) making therefore multiple combat during a day very dangerous :)

Ah yes, my blade dancing war wizard. He would have been fun to actually play for more than a bit. I had a really nice back story set up for him too with lots of hooks. What about Throne of Night converted to 2e for a bunch of duergar, deep dwarves, or drow?

Sovereign Court

Arduin?

Liberty's Edge

What about the G-series! Anyone interested in playing that? Either as 1st/2nd edition, or maybe even as 5th??

Id be down for an AD&D game as well! I haven't opened those books in quite a while.

Would we be using the 'complete' line along with skills and powers and whatnot?

Put together a retro AD&D campaign and I'm in.

I would think the A slavers series (or classic Hommlett series) could run into the G series if someone had them. Not it as DM!!

Seems like there was quite a bit of interest in an AD&D 2E game. Before this thread took off I had another thread that went Sword & Wizardry Age of Worms.

I'd be willing to play in an AD&D game too. Possibly even run one, but I need to make sure I keep my other game rolling before I invest anymore energy into pbp. However... my tabletop group is currently pulling out old AD&D books for character creation next week so I will soon be re-acquainted with the game if nothing comes along before then.
