Halfling Arcanist Feat Advice for PFS

Liberty's Edge

Hey all,

I'm making a Halfling Arcanist for PFS and having a hard time filling in a few feats. I've thought about taking a trait to make bluff a class skill and pickup "Childlike" or to take a trait to make Stealth a class skill and later get a Ring of Invisibility to make it harder for things to detect me while stealthed.

Any suggestions on Feats or ideas on some useful Skills that I should make as a Class Skill with a trait?

Halfling Arcanist
Lvl 1: Improved Initiative
Lvl 3: Undecided
Lvl 5: Extra Exploit
Lvl 7: Improved Familiar
Lvl 9: Spell Penetration
Lvl 11: Undecided

What caster role do you intens to fill?
Edit: i like the stealth idea.

Liberty's Edge

I'm having a hard time really pinning something down to be honest.

I've looked at picking up PBShot & Precise Shot, I've looked at some summoning feats, and looked into some other random stuff. I'm making Enchantment and Illusion Opposition schools, going Conjuration: Teleportation as my Specialized school mainly for the teleporting/shift abilities because getting grappled is no fun.

I've thought about taking Eschew Materials and Exploit: Lepidstadt Shifter to be able to cast spells while being polymorphed. I'm not sure how great that'd be though as I'm not familiar with all the polymorph options available and how much of a boon that'd actually be.

I think when making a character it is important to visualize how they will solve problems and fix stuff. If you make a spellcaster with out having this vision you will have problems deciding spells, actions and all sort of things. Conjuration(teleportation) is a good School it sort of leans towards a old school GOD wizard approach and that is fine. Get Spell focus(conjuration), augment summoning and aim at buff, debuff crowd control. and with your stealth plan you can do that from hiding at least some of the time. I would Pick other opposed schools since invisibility was part of your first plan and enchantment hold so Many good buff and debuff spells. Evocation and necromancy was my conjurers opposite schools and i never missed them.

The only spell I would miss with Evocation is Emergency Force Shield but to be honest given what you are suggesting I would consider different archetypes.

Summoning role - Consider the Occultist, it gives you long duration summons as a standard action using your Reservoir.

Buffing/Shapeshifting Role - Brown fur arcanists are awesome buffers. At level 3 they can throw out +4 str Enlarge persons for the fighters. At level 4 they can start handing out +6 enhancement bonus spells like Bull's Strength. Imagine Turn one I start casting Enlarge person, turn 2 Enlarge goes off and I bull strength the fighter, he is now at Str +10, goodbye BBEG. At 9th level you can start handing out Monstrous Physique spells to your melee, or turn your rogue into an air elemental. And at level 10 just toss overland flight on your whole party.

Understood, don't get me wrong though but just because I plan on summoning sometimes doesn't mean that I want to make it my primary focus. Same with throwing some buffs at various times. All arcane casters have these options and should use them when it's appropriate.

I'm still not sure what additional feats I should grab. Or, if using Magical Lineage trait, what spell I should put that on.

Liberty's Edge

I looked into ray spells and I didn't see very much that was worth sinking 2 feats into. Anyone care to give advice on ray casters and if they are worth it? Being a Halfling I'd have the +1atk from being small and the +2dex racial bonus.

Go dispel master. Not optimal but I've play some 6+ scenarios that the fights could have been solved or neutered by dispel magic and/or a counter spell.

You could still summon and buff to fill in the rest of your tactics. Heck you could even be an occultist archetype and manage it.

First, you are an arcanist. You need not pick an opposed school, because you don't specialize (unless you go with some archtype). Read the exploits carefully and then choose which path to follow.
My arcanist 11.2 is currently going through the "Waking Rune". He went the metamagic route. Lots of exploits for it.
The true strength of the class--over wizard--is potent magic....

If you are looking at traits then Pragmatic Activator turns UMD into a charisma skill and Student of Philosophy does the same thing for all aspects of Bluff or Diplomacy that you might care about.
