I've read the novels, but haven't actually done the RPG. Although, I actually originally got into pbp because I wanted to play L5R. Which is why my first character is Asian themed, and I made up a clan system for his background. But as I discovered, I don't actually have the most recent rules set. :/

Whilst I hate to show my age, I've been playing 5 rings since 1st ed, when Unicorn bushi picked locks better from horseback ;p
Was involved in Living Rokugan and then its successor Heroes of Rokugan.
Haven't seen 4th ed but 3rd was a breath of fresh air so if 4th improves on that then awesome!
Long story short: love the setting, love the system, definitely interested :)
What sort of campaign are you looking to run?

What sort of campaign are you looking to run?
It's actually not a campaign, but a classic horror-themed adventure that was popular back in 1st edition. It's a pretty beefy adventure though, so I could see it taking months to complete via PbP.
I have a buddy I'm sure would probably like to play this as well. He loves the political side and pushing his weight around in the courts.
The more the merrier!
As a side note, how do people feel about GM-provided characters? They'd be very well fleshed out with connections to one another and various NPCs.

GM Olmek |

Fair enough!
So far, it looks like we have 5ish people with a slight preference towards 3E.
Here are some details on the adventure:
In a sentence, the theme would be described as: "When you look for secrets, be ready for what you find."
It is set in the early 1120's, in the midst of the Lion-Crane War and directly before the Scorpion Coup. The PCs (for a to be determined reason) are sent to Winter Court in Kyuden Hida, the dread fortress of the Crab Clan.
The main clans represented in this adventure would be in order of prevalence: Crab, Phoenix, Lion, Scorpion, and Unicorn. The Mantis are not yet a major clan and the relationship between Crane and Crab are strained by a diplomatic snafu and the latter's burgeoning friendship with the Lion. The enigmatic Dragon are on the opposite end of the empire and rarely send diplomats so far south.
While we could certainly have characters from those Clans present (I know Ashe mentioned a Crane samurai), they would face a court without blood allies.
Tell me what you guys think. :)

Ashe |

Sounds pretty cool, have to look at my character when I get home from work, I think he was built with 4ED, I'm fine being ostracized in the courts. Family dishonor could have been from a dual with the Lion's that the crane expected to win, but when his brother lost he brought shame to the family so now Mitsu travels to gain honor and fame as a duelist to earn position to regain the family and clan honor.

I do have access to a pdf of the 4E Core Rulebook. I could upload it to Google Drive and share it with you guys. I'd certainly prefer to run it in 4E.
I don't think you need to encourage copyright infringement and doing so is forbidden on these forums. But the pdf is easily available on drivethrurpg. It looks like the price is only about $35 and they seem to have a wide variety of splat books available too (from my just cursory look there).

GM Olmek |

Copyright infringement sounds so dramatic. I'd like to think that I'd be privately sharing a legally obtained copy of the rulebook with my players, just as I would if we were sitting around a table.
But your point is taken. The rules are the rules and I'll refrain from doing that.
This is why I'm willing to run the game in whatever edition the players had available. I'm more concerned with seeing the story play out than I am with playing with superior rules.

Fiendish Zen |

Campaign description sounds good :)
From what I've read over the last few hours it looks like 4th has gone a long way to fix the overpowered schools issue.
I agree with Tourach in that GM should decide and go with what he wants to run the most. Looks like us players are happy with either so no worries there :)
As regards pregens, my experience is that non-newb players are happy to use them in a short one shot, but anything with any legs where you're spending xp gets frustrating. Half the fun is creating your own character and seeing how they develop in response to the campaign events :)
Might I suggest a compromise? If you're concerned about party composition, say '3 bushi, 1 shugenja,1 courtier' and we'll work it out. Same thing if you want certain clans represented. As to npc hooks, tell us what they are, who these people are supposed to be to us and we'll build them in to our backgrounds! What do you think GM Olmek?
I'm just happy to return to L5R regardless of where chargen ends up, the above are just suggestions :)

GM Olmek |

I definitely prefer 4th. If we can manage to some how get a party of 4-6 people able to play the 4th edition, then let's do that.

Party composition should probably break down like you suggest. With five players, it would be three bushi, a courtier, and a shugenja. If we find a sixth, that final role can be more fluid.
I have a list of NPCs attending Winter Court available, which will be released when we dive into chargen. As we work on them, I'd be happy to help suggest relationships between the NPCs and your fellow PCs.

I haven't had much interest in a PBP for Pathfinder, but been thinking about trying it out just to see.
Now, a game like L5R RPG.. I haven't played it since 1st and 2nd edition and have had a hankering to actually play 4th edition lately. Plus the rules paradigm is sooo much more compatible with PBP.. I could win in two ways at once here!
I'm ultimately flexible as to what I'd be willing to play, but my first choice is always something from the Unicorn.

While I'm not big on pre-generated characters, I'd be open to being given a whole lot of direction on a character, such as Clan/Family and possibly even School. Actually I'd probably be open to a lot of direction concerning background, and character and NPC connections as well.
I guess it comes down to whether or not any of the GM characters strike my fancy and how flexible we could be with them with some alterations to suit taste.

I would LOVE to join in on this! I have tried to get into games before of L5R, both locally and online, but they never lasted! I would really like to try it! I've read a few of the books, and I loved the Scorpion clan! I've never done a shugenja before, but I wouldn't be opposed to it, or to playing the more familiar bushi and courtier if needed!

Fiendish Zen |

Much as I would hate to compete for slots, go for it just please let us know so we can polish our daisho to an even shinier shine for presenting to the emperor GM to choose amongst us ;p
On the whole concept side, I'd lean towards a Matsu or S~#!ome, or else try my hand at the shugenja if no one else steps forward. In which case either Kuni or Isawa, depending on how many hints the GM wants to provide about which might be more useful ;p

Fiendish Zen |

Gah, I'm already checking this thread every couple of hours and have borrowed my friend's 4th ed. books (anyone else have a friend like that who seems to buy lots of books but never has the time to play?!). Very mush hope this matures in to recruitment :)
@Sukrai: A ninja can add quite a lot to a game if done well, but it really all does depend on the campaign and the other characters. I think a PbP's slower pace allows for a better game in that way, said ninja can do a lot with the GM via PM without taking up a lot of 'game time' for instance, but given the ninja will always be the outsider, (most likely no other character in the group would countenance their dishonorable actions or suffer them to live!), it might be a challenge to play and still feel a part of the group.
Just my two koku's worth :p

Sukrai |

It depends, as you said, on how you play a ninja. Ninjas are NOT assassins except in the worst of circumstances. They are better at being spies, and at sabotage. Also, one can never LET people know that they are a ninja. As far as the group would be concerned I am merely a bushi. That said, it does depend on the group and the game, so we'll see!

Link for the recruitment thread is here.
As far as I know, the code does not allow for exploding or keeping dice. You'll just roll a bunch of d10s and do the work. :)
