Ifrit Fire Elementalist Wizard -- Resist Fire / 10?

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

A first level fire elementalist wizard gains resist fire 5.

An ifrit has resist fire 5.

Do these two stack? That is, would a first level fire elementalist ifrit wizard have fire resistance 10?

Grand Lodge

They do not stack.

Can you give me a reference to the rule that says they don't stack?

Here is a good reference in this post...

Hope it helps

OK thanks.... Although, do you know where in the books it says that energy resistance doesn't stack? (I'm sure it does somewhere.... All I've been able to find is page 562-563 of the CRB, which says that racial energy resistance doesn't stack with what a spell provides, but it doesn't say anything more general.)

CRB p11 wrote:
Bonus: Bonuses are numerical values that are added to checks and statistical scores. Most bonuses have a type, and as a general rule, bonuses of the same type are not cumulative (do not “stack”)—only the greater bonus granted applies.
CRB p13 wrote:
Stacking: Stacking refers to the act of adding together bonuses or penalties that apply to one particular check or statistic. Generally speaking, most bonuses of the same type do not stack. Instead, only the highest bonus applies. Most penalties do stack, meaning that their values are added together. Penalties and bonuses generally stack with one another, meaning that the penalties might negate or exceed part or all of the bonuses, and vice versa.

Basic design principle: the same benefit does not stack unless the benefit states otherwise.

Any reference to stacking anywhere in the game will reinforce this.

Benefit: What the feat enables the character (“you” in the feat description) to do. If a character has the same feat more than once, its benefits do not stack unless indicated otherwise in the description.
CRB p208 wrote:
Bonus Types: Usually, a bonus has a type that indicates how the spell grants the bonus. The important aspect of bonus types is that two bonuses of the same type don’t generally stack. With the exception of dodge bonuses, most circumstance bonuses, and racial bonuses, only the better bonus of a given type works (see Combining Magical Effects). The same principle applies to penalties—a character taking two or more penalties of the same type applies only the worst one, although most penalties have no type and thus always stack. Bonuses without a type always stack, unless they are from the same source.
CRB p208 wrote:

Stacking Effects: Spells that provide bonuses or penalties on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves. More generally, two bonuses of the same type don’t stack even if they come from different spells (or from effects other than spells; see Bonus Types, above).

Different Bonus Types: The bonuses or penalties from two different spells stack if the modifiers are of different types. A bonus that doesn’t have a type stacks with any bonus.

Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the one with the highest strength applies.

Summary: if you have two sources of the same benefit they do not stack and you take the higher one unless the benefit states otherwise.

A comparison can be made with Manifested Blood (Advanced Class Guide) which specifically says it stacks.

If you already have resistance to that energy type, the resistance increases by 5.

OK, thanks.

Since they don't stack, you might consider swapping out the ifrit's natural fire resistance for a +4 to initiative using Wildfire Heart from the Advanced Race Guide.
