Ninth Level Spell selection

Advice

Silver Crusade

My tiefling abysal sorcerer is leveling up to ninth level. Any good advice for new spells? I gain a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level spell and pick up stoneskin as a bloodline spell. Here is Myrlan's current spell casting list;

Spells: ∞/8/8/7/4 Base DC: 17
0 - Acid Splash (c), Detect Magic, Disrupt Undead, Ghost Sound, Message, Open/Close, Prestidigitation, Resistance
1 - Cause Fear*, Ray of Enfeeblement, Shield, Shocking Grasp, Snapdragon Fireworks, Vanish
2 - Bull's Strength*, Acid Arrow (c), Scorching Ray, Summon Monster II (c)
3 - Haste, Rage*, Summon Monster III** (c)
4 - Summon Monster IV (c)

Myrlan's usual tactics are to vanish in the first round then buff players or summon combat support. I could use some good advice for spells to boost PCs and summoned creatures. I do have Spell Focus Conjuration and Augment Summoning as feats; and will probably take Superior Summoning this level.

Are there any feats that give summoned creatures energy resistance? Energy damage seems to be the one issue I have when summoning creatures.

For clarification, you should refer to spell level as the actual level of the spells. When you say 9th level you are meaning character level, but you question is a little confusing because it sounds like you asking about 9th level spell like Wish.

As far as recommendations for spells...I don't have great ones.

But if you wanted to focus on summoning you should look at Acadamae Graduate feat.

Strike that, you don't qualify for multiple reason. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I like Acid Pit for good battlefield control and SoS against things with poor reflex saves.

Sometimes you need to make a lot of things die at the same time. This is when the party will be relying on you. a couple of good spells for that that you have access to right now are fireball, and dragon's breath. they are both good and have each a number of weaknesses. However if you feel confident about your defenses I'd say dragon's breath. Otherwise take improved invisibility, and you may want to pick up glitterdust or see invisibility for when things use the whole invisibility thing against you.

Evolved Summoned Monster. Spend the Evolution point to gain a resist energy of your choice.

What is the Augment Summons feat? Did you list Augment Summoning twice?

You may wish to pick up this feat at some point as well.

Silver Crusade

Yes, I accidentally had Augment Summoning listed twice, but have the correct number of feats for 8th level. Fixed it now. I am considering Superior Summoning as my feat; but I'm just not sold yet. I want to study my other options first.

I do note that Evolved Summoned Monster specifically requires that you have Summon Monster I as a prereq (which I do not); and only affects one summoned creature, not all creatures summoned. SO I don't think I will go with that at this time.

I think I've picked my three spells. For the moment I have selected Gliterdust, Mad Monkeys, and Black Tentacles. I know, I know. GMs hate it when you cast Black Tentacles, but it's just a damned good area control spell.

I was gonna suggest Black Tentacles myself. Good spell.

Black tentacles or dimension door. See invis and mad monkeys or fly. You need more mobility soon and there is nothing like DDing your Raging Barbarian buddy Down to the BBEG when he feel safe at a distance:)

Silver Crusade

I may pick up a spell page with Dim Door on it for good measure and I tend to pick up a scroll of fly if I expect to need mobility. So many options and not enough spell slots.

he he true. But as a sorcerer, at least how i would plan it, you want some decent offensive options, some decent defensive options and some good utility spells on the list. So picking both, mad monkeys and Black tentacles at the sme level seem like overkill one the offensive control spells and underkill(is that a thing?) on defensive utility.

For level 2, False Life. You may want to swap out Summon II for Mirror Image.
For level 3, Fly or Dispel Magic (you can swap out/replace later with greater versions)
For level 4: Dimension Door, Evard's, or Imp Invisibility.

Also, the Summon Pit line of spells is very useful.

Note that Prot/Evil's ability to suppress charms is a great spell at all levels.

A spell page with M Summon I would qualify you for that feat you want, cheaply. Note that if it only applies to 1 monster, that's fine if it's your highest level summon.

You should be swapping out lower level versions of spells for higher ones, and replacing them with utility spells useful at all levels.

Concentrate on acquiring utility spells at cheap low levels with Spell Pages, and work into higher level spells when you've got more free cash.

I don't know if you're fighting undead, but a rod of ectoplasmic spell combined with a Web spell is a super way to shut down incorporeals, since they don't have a strength score, for instance.

Okay, ya'll convinced me. Dimension Door now, Black Tentacles later.

Still not sure what feat to get yet. But will think on that more later.

Phantasmal Killer may be good for bad guys like rogues who have good reflex saves but may have bad will and fort saves. It is one of those save or die spells.

PK is a niche spell for just about anyone, due to the need for double saves.

Lots of more broadly useful level 4 spells out there. Honestly, I'd take Ice Storm before PK.

I know there are better spells. I just have a thing for PK.
