Help with Sylvan Sorcerer build!

Advice

Hi everyone :) me and my friends are playing the "Rise of the Runelords" campaign and i need some advise on my character build. I started as a druid, but i didn't enjoy it very much due to the number of summoned creature, so i changed to a kitsune sorcerer with the sylvan bloodline. My first idea was to build an enchanter (at lvl 5 the dc of compulsion spells is something like 21 + level of the spell), but after four sessions the GM just told me the enchanting school won't be very useful, as the campaign is full of undead or creature with the immunity to mind-affecting effects. So, now I'm thinking to change a little bit and concentrate on buffing my animal companion (a roc) and using transmutation spells on it to make most of the damage. Which Feats and spells are useful to this? Thanks a lot :)

Just in case, here my lvl 6 ability scores (after racial modifiers, -2 to str and +2 to dex, cha for kitsunes):
STR 9
DEx 16
CON 12
INT 12
WIS 10
CHA 19

and my roc's one:
STR 14
DEx 21
CON 10
INT 2
WIS 13
CHA 11

Oh, my animal companion is at the same level of my character beacause of Boon Companion.

Your biggest problem as an arcane caster, the options to make your natural weapons magical are non existent which is going to be the biggest issue until you can cast limited wish, to cast magic fang greater on your animal companion but that's not until level 14.

But anyway would recommend(With the share spell features can cast spells personal with target of you on your animal companion):

-angelic aspect (choose one of them, the greater one is of course best but depend how long you can wait).
-Cat's Grace/Bull strength of course.
-Mirror Image or Mage armor, for some protection.
-Animal Growth (obviously)
-Transformation

etc...

To take care of your Roc's LACK of magical attacks, you can Up it's INT to 3 and have it learn the Eldritch Fang feat from APG. This lets it's attacks count as both magic and silver.

Another option is to take the evolved companion feat to give it magic attack or, later once you get the Eldritch Fang, Pounce. You can also take this feat multiple times. Improved Damage, Magic Attack, Pounce, and maybe Natural Armor (could also make the Roc's bite do 1.5 Str, instead of normal).

Spirit's Gift can give your companion Fast Healing 1. Mid Combat it is a meh kinda thing, as it will rarely be enough healing to keep your pet alive. Out of Combat, Roc will be back to full in a minute or 2.

Final Feat, Totem Beast will allow your pet a good bonus (constant Animal Focus, that you can not change) so for example, a +2/+4/+6 bonus to DEX.

Ok! Thank you for the advice :P

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Alittle advice...abuse share spell.

Mage armor, shield, enlarge person, true strike, expedient retreat, stunning barrier

Make your pet a real arcane beast.

At the moment the buffs i have are: mage armor, shield, enlarge person and haste. I just reached the 6th level. Next lvl, i'll probably choose true strike (1), false life (2). A friend suggested to take Improved Share Spell as soon as i can to save some spell slot... is it worth?

If you have invested in UMD, grab a Mnemonic Vestment and a scroll of Greater Magic Fang. It's a DC 20 roll to fool the vestment that you can use Divine spells and a DC 28 to fool the scroll you have enough wisdom to cast it. Better yet, if you can get an arcane version of the scroll off of the summoner list, you'll just need the DC 20 check to cast it. Of course, you don't really need to invest so heavily in this if you just buy or make an Amulet of Mighty fists for your birdie.

Improved Share Spell is good, but Extend spell is also a good metamagic feat for buffers. It will help the length of your buffs to last more than one battle. Of course, you could purchase a extend metamagic rod as well, which should do most of the work. Once you get to higher levels though, the benefits can be nice. If you pick up Form of the Dragon, you can turn both of you into Dragons. How cool is that?

For spells, I recommend Mirror Image, Displacement, Stoneskin, Blur and Burrow. For shaping spells, get Alter Self, Monstrous Physique, Form of the Dragon or Giant Form. Feel free to swap out the shaping spells for better ones at higher level.

Is this actually legal? I didn't think it was.

Improved Share Spell is only really good if you are riding the Roc into battle.

If you are, then sure, go for it.

The Vest does not work like that. Yes you can UMD a scroll, but the vest is specific about it's requirements and does not allow you to cheat like this.

However, a 1 level dip in Hunter or Summoner (wandilon pet since it will only be 1 level) will give you the Magic Fang (wandilon will also allow you to increase your buffing power).

If the point is the damage reduction, couldn't I buy some lvl 1 scroll (magic fang) and use them only when needed? They're really cheap and also I have UMD at max. At higher levels I was planning to buy an amulet of mighty fists...

Ask the DM if he allows wild blooded and cross blooded at the same time, many will, because then you could take impossible bloodline and everything (even constructs) could fall victim to your spells.

No, I can't be crossblooded!

I'm not sure: why should I take "Alter self"? Is there any form particularly useful with this spell?

Alter Self can seem really bland at first.

Then you find a humanoid race with bite and two claws such as Lizardfolk and it opens up some more combat viability. You can probably find someone with one of the vision types and/or scent as well.
Three 1d4 attacks per round for 1 minute per level is an OK threat at lower levels.
It also works for your familiar with Share spells

But... my roc already has 3 attacks and next level they are going to become stronger due to size increase (2 talons 1d6 and a bite 1d8). Is there any humanoid form stronger or more useful?

Not really when you consider flight and grab.

Enlarge him from large and drop people out of the skies.

Edit: Let me offer some coolness factor. A roc grow to large...Enlarge person takes him to Huge. This makes him bigger than young Dragons. (this should be scary to whomever sees this beast). You can buff him with Mage armor and mirror Image. Basically this Roc can now pick up giants and drop them from the sky...Imagine the sheer Horror of this creature roosted up defending a city. Nothing is going to want to tango with it for fear of its size. Rule of Cool bro, Rule of Cool.
