Would a monk with Belier's Bite deal bleed damage upon choosing to deal damage with a grapple?

I think so. I read,

"When you damage an opponent with an unarmed strike, you deal an extra 1d4 bleed damage" for Belier's Bite and

"Damage

You can inflict damage to your target equal to your unarmed strike, a natural attack, or an attack made with armor spikes or a light or one-handed weapon. This damage can be either lethal or nonlethal."

for Grappling.

I guess you could say inflicting damage = to your unarmed strike does not count as damaging an opponent with an unarmed strike. But if you have Belier's Bite, I think that means your damage is equal to your regular damage + your Bleed Damage, so yeah.

The absolute best way to do this is with a maneuver master monk, since you can just make your grapple check AND hit the guy with an unarmed strike, negating any hemming and hawing. Also, make the baddie pinned instead, as that's much nastier.

galahad2112,

Oh, I don't know.

If you were a White Haired Witch, at level 2 you gain Constrict, so your first strike does damage. If you take Feral Combat Training for your White Hair, you get to apply Belier's Bite to the Constrict Damage, and other wonderful things you can do to augment your Unarmed Strikes.

You could also do something similar with an Alchemal Tentacle.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry, but No. The dev team recently posted a FAQ about the Amulet of Mighty Fists that has a direct bearing on this type of question.

Grapple is a Combat Maneuver, not an unarmed strike, so Belier's Bite would not be applied to a grapple.

No apology is necessary, because yes.

The Amulet of Might Fists post has no bearing on this case.

The Damage Maintain-a-Grapple effect says you can inflict damage to your target equal to your unarmed strike, and if you are a level 5 Monk with Belier's bite, your unarmed strike damage is 1d8+1d4Bleed, and that would be your Grapple damage, too.

@ Scott Wilhelm

While the White Haired Witch is a VERY viable grappler, the original post was about a monk. As such, I think that the Maneuver Master is the best route for the Monk to take...

Good point. I was only talking about a 2 level dip in either White Haired Witch or Alchemist (for the Tentacle), but if the OP really wanted to keep it pure Monk--and many OPs do--your way is probably the best way for Grapple to damage.
