Duelist build

Advice

Hi I am fairly new to pathfinder and looking to build a duelist/conman for a campaign I am in. We are starting at level one. Any advice for choosing feats and equipment as I progress in level? I am playing a human rogue with stats as follows ( we use 4d6 to calculate our ability scores).

Str 20
Dex 22
Con 17
Int 16
Wis 14
Cha 20

What books are available?
Do your stats include racial bonuses?
Do you know anything else about the game?

All of the books that hey have on the PRD are owned by my GM. I know most of the basic rules as I have read the Core Rulebook through, and I have played D&D 3.5 a few years ago. The setting for the campaign from what I know is basically a theives guild kind of thing. I have factored in the racial +2 bonus for humans and put it on Dexterity.

Wow those are some nice ability scores. With a decent con and wis you dont have to worry about saves for a bit.

Sovereign Court

If you want to be duelist/conman, you might want to look into Swashbuckler instead of Rogue. You get 4 less skill points/level, but you get all the social skills as class skills. In addition the Swashbuckler is perfect for dueling. Are you allowed to arrange your stats in any order you want? If so, switch you STR score with your INT score and you are good for skill points, you won't be using your STR score for anything except carrying capacity anyhow (You'll be using DEX for both hit and damage).

If going the route of a duelist, I would actually recommend either a Swasbuckler or a Fighter built for dueling. Stats should go:

STR 14
DEX 22
CON 20
INT 16
WIS 17
CHA 20

If you wanna focus more on the rogue aspect, try out a Slayer and be way less angry about your character.

I'm guessing you want to pick up a rapier, so naturally Weapon Focus (rapier) and Weapon Finesse (either as a feat or through a Slayer Talent) along with Fencing Grace will be good feats to pick up as early as possible. With retraining, you can get it as early as lvl 2.

You can also do the same thing but with a Dueling Sword, though you will need to mess around with your traits to get proficiency, and take Slashing Grace instead.

Heirloom weapon can give you proficiency for free, Sword Scion gives you +1 on attack rolls.

Other good feats for you are Improved Initative and Power Attack.

Sovereign Court

Swashbuckler is nice because it gives you Weapon Finesse to start and unlike everyone else, you get Improved Critical at 5th level (instead of having to wait until BAB +8). I actually like the Aldori dueling sword because the Prestige Class, Aldori Swordlord, is great. Unfortunately, Heirloom weapon does not give you proficiency (doesn't work for exotic weapons). So 1st level feats would be Exotic Weapon Prof. (Alsori sword) and Slashing Grace. At 1st level now you will be using DEX for both hit and damage.

Also, I think master_marshmallow's stat arrangement is perfect.

Inspired Blade swashbuckler as a dip, then full Slayer. You'll only have 2 less skill points than the rogue, but you'll be a lot better at both combat and skills. That is, unless you have something you really want from rogue, then 4 levels of rogue can work.

Unfortunately I have to play as a rogue for at least the first few levels (my party is small and lacks one). I was thinking of multi-classing at 3rd or 4th level as a swashbuckler, once I have a decent amount of ranks in disable device (which I don't think any other classes have). As for the Aldori dueling sword, I would like to get one, but I am starting out with a rapier.

Sovereign Court

Any class can take Disable Device, you just lose the class skill bonus (but there is probably a trait that will make it a class skill as well as giving a +1 bonus). Just take one level of Rogue so you get the Trapfinding ability so you can disable magical traps. also, I forgot about Fencing Grace, so stick with rapier and you don't have to blow a feat on Exotic Weapon Prof. So you take Weapon Focus and Fencing Grace at 1st level with same result as above and an extra +1 to hit.

I would just take the trait and not worry about the magical traps so you don't have to waste a level on Rogue.

You don't need to be a rogue to put points into disable device. Once you have 1 level, you get the bonus for it and that's all you need (and slayer gives the same bonus and is generally better).

I would like to have the sneak attack from the rogue to use for feinting. For feats what about dodge or mobility?

Sneak attack doesn't really helps you feint. You have to feint to use sneak attack.

Sneak attack is useful, and if you take 2.4 levels of rogue you can grab a few things to make use of it for dodging; for example, the offensive defense rogue talent (one of the reasons to take a few rogue levels over Slayer).

Dodge and mobility are not good feats.

Or going investigator, especially mastermind, can give you what you want. Be really good at skills and a good combat presence.

Are sword scion and heirloom weapon traits? I couldn't find them on the PRD.

They are both traits.

The heirloom weapon trick won't work because it's not a martial weapon... sad day.

Just means you need to stick to a rapier.

Slayers can get trapfinding with a talent.

If you want to be a combat rogue, go slayer instead.

Ok thank you guys for your help.
