Can I mount a mounted mount?

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

So, this may be an odd question, but I was thinking about it, and can't find any rules that disallow it.

There's this new Fighter archetype in the Familiar Folio called Eldritch Guardian, and it's the bee's knees. Basically it replaces relatively few class abilities (just two feats + Bravery) for a full progression Familiar that shares your combat feats. Then I started wondering:

If I picked up Martial Weapon Proficiency: Lance so that my familiar had it, and had, say, the dreaded Monkey familiar with the Mauler archetype, could I as a small sized creature mount the medium monkey whilst it is mounted on another creature? You could even take the rest of your levels Cavalier for more mounted combat goodness, and an almost full progression mount. My question isn't one of viability: it's simply one of possibility.

Obviously this is utterly ridiculous, and I wouldn't pull out this kind of wackiness unless I was playing in a game that called for it, but it IS something to consider.

I think this is a "No one even considered it as a possibility so why would they make a rule about it" situation.

In other words there are no rules saying you can't, but that doesn't mean the GM will say you can.

Are you asking if two riders can ride a mount? I would say yes. One would control the mount while the other would make attacks as available.

I do not think it would be very difficult to adjudicate it that way.

I think he wants a whole stack of mounted characters, one on another. Like a centaur mammoth rider, with a human knight riding the centaur.

I would imagine this would create all sorts of weird interactions, like with the ride cover action, which would make it really hard to adjudicate.

Think about what would happen if the top rider OR the intermediate mount/rider failed a Ride check by enough. Can you say Yurtle the Turtle?

I've speculated on this before, but for three different characters.

There's a passive barbarian rage power that grants the barbarian's mount the effects of all of his passive rage powers. (And, obviously, a prerequisite that duplicates the base rage effects). The Sohei can spend a ki point to give his mount some temporary HP and a bunch of monk abilities and the ability to get the benefits of any ability for which the Sohei spends ki points for an hour per level.

If you allow mount stacks either of these can cascade down the stack, though the Sohei's ability can be interpreted as requiring a ki point per step of the stack, first to give the ability to benefit from ki spending and second to spend the ki for it to benefit.

While the ride skill does allow for riding "ill-suited" mounts at a penalty to your checks, I'm pretty sure there's also a caveat somewhere for riding that any mount must be "appropriate" to be ridden.

As such, I don't see many GMs finding monkeys as being "appropriate" for riding.

I've seen plenty of pictures online of mice riding cats riding dogs, so by that logic, sure.

You could look to the Summoner for justification of that. Quadruped and Serpentine are eligible to be used as mounts, but it is not permitted for Bipeds, which would most certainly include the monkey.

I suppose the monkey could have a backpack that you ride around in, but it's not really "riding" at that point, you're more of a passenger in a vehicle.

For more on this undoubtedly crucial aspect of the mounted combat rules, consult Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss. Despite its age, it is still the definitive work in the field of turtle-stacking.
