Being payed 500K a year to play Pro Football (you think it's great, consider the pain you'll have the rest of your life from it).
Being in Spec Ops (sure you do cool things, but technically you can't tell anyone about what you did).
Thinking that giving three different colors as the end of Mass Effect is actually three different endings...

Most are lucky if they can make four. However, the results typically are of massive TBI which causes memory loss and later dementia.
Is it worth knowing your kids names? Is it worth not knowing your own family for 5 million (If you actually last 10 years?).
It's actually a pretty serious issue that many Ex-Pro-football players are dealing with these days. In many cases medical bills can equal a million in a matter of a year...that 5 million goes quick in some of those treatment facilities.
They are finding that a lot of the Football players that weren't the big money makers (those who made that 500K instead of the multi-millions that the big stars make) can't afford the treatments for the resulting injuries they endure for the rest of their life. Some of the most serious are the TBI ones.

The sport is doing what it can to reduce these problems. It is not enough, and it's not going to be enough. Big people smashing into one another does lead to injuries, and claiming they are changing this is worth the air they spend saying so. Dementia is an absolute horror, nobody should suffer from it, and even the risk of it should be enough to shut the sport down. Same with boxing.

Is any amount of money worth those things? In other words, the pay isn't the problem...

Ah. I know very little of football so I was thinking about it in terms of other sports (such as basketball). I didn't consider that football is all about smashing your head against other heads, which is of course a pretty important factor...
